Venom Creator Todd McFarlane Shares His Opinion on Spider-Man Controversy

Venom and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane shared his opinion on the recent Spider-Man controversy that will see the web-crawler no longer appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe until a new deal is made.
Spider-Man appears to be officially with Sony and will no longer be inhabiting the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra recently spoke with Variety about Spider-Man:
“We had a great run with (Feige) on Spider-Man movies. We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out….the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work.”
In fact, Vinciquerra is confident Spider-Man will do just fine back at home with Sony.
“Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well. I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”
Vinciquerra did not completely rule out the character showing up in the MCU in the future. He noted, “it’s a long life.” For now, Sony as a studio plans on incorporating Spider-Man into their shared universe which includes Venom and Morbius.
Every corner of the internet and creative influence has an opinion about what’s going on with the deal break down. And more recently, Todd McFarlane has thrown his hat in with Sony.
As reported by CBR, McFarlane appeared at Fan Expo Toronto where he talked about the Disney/Sony deal break down:
“You saw what happened with Spider-Man? They were trying to extract Spider-Man, right? And Sony went, ‘No, no, it ain’t gonna happen.'”
CBR adds in their commentary, “According to McFarlane, this move might be the smartest thing that Sony could have done for Peter Parker.”
The Amazing Spider-Man McFarlane
McFarlane is best known for his work on Spawn comics as well as his run in Amazing Spider-Man in 1990, where he worked as both writer and illustrator for the series. He also worked to rework the design of Spider-Man, and co-created Venom with David Michelinie.
The designs by McFarlane were iconic and cemented his association with the character for the next two decades.
Catch 22
Todd McFarlane has writer and producer credit on the Venom film. And he’s listed for credit in the upcoming Venom sequel film.
His Spawn movie back in 1997 was distributed and produced through New Line Cinema, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. So, Sony is the only company other than Warner Bros/New Line Cinema to give him production/writing credit for a film.
On the other side of the fence, Disney/Marvel hasn’t put him in the credits in any of their films.
Needless to say, McFarlane has skin in the game. He isn’t giving his two cents without bias.
