Captain Boomerang Actor Jai Courtney on James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad: “It’s Going to be Tonally Different”

In a previous article, we commented on the expected tonal shift for The Suicide Squad due to James Gunn’s involvement. Fans strongly hope Gunn will deliver something far and away different from David Ayer’s take in 2016 muddled by the studio. Jai Courtney, returning to reprise his role as Captain Boomerang, is excited. He opened up to ComicBookMovie.com about the quasi-sequel and had a lot of good to say about where Gunn will take things and Ayer too.

Asked about the change in direction under Gunn, Courtney calls it a “challenge” and “new energy” everybody welcomes:

“I don’t think it’s going to be weird. It’s kind of funny that we’re getting it up to go again and there’s a bunch of new people and a bunch of old people, too. It’s going to be different, for sure, but I think everyone’s welcoming that challenge and welcoming the new energy in.”

Of David Ayer, Courtney said he “loved working with David,” and that he would “work with David again in a heartbeat,” but he trusts Gunn and is interested in seeing what the Guardians of the Galaxy director brings:

“But Gunn, too, is quite prolific and really, obviously, does know what he’s doing. I’m excited to see what he brings to it. It’s going to be tonally different but very cool as well. The world has evolved from where we were at at that point; he’s going to have his own take on it, and it’s going to be great.”

Courtney “let the cat out of the bag” in April he was coming back to the Squad in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He did attest to how much he loved playing Captain Boomerang, an Australian character:

“I loved playing Captain Boomerang. It’s just like a rocker’s nightmare. Just looking forward to reprising that and getting the gold tooth back in and getting after it.”

Jai Courtney reunites with Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis. They’re joined by a string of newcomers including David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Steve Agee as King Shark, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Taika Waititi, Pete Davidson, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Alice Braga, Idris Elba, John Cena, Peter Capaldi, and Nathan Fillion.

Most of their roles are under wraps although Elba is rumored for Bronze Tiger, Cena is often pegged as Peacemaker, and Kevin Smith mentioned he could see Fillion as either Batman or Green Lantern on his Fatman Beyond podcast. Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi stated last month at Fan Expo Canada he is shaving his head and already in the process of fitting for prosthetics. Also joining the cast is martial artist, fitness model, and stuntwoman Mayling Ng. CBM moots she might play an Amazon since she was one in Wonder Woman, but she is also right for the “female alien” we reported on.

Unfortunately, we won’t know for sure anytime soon; Ng noted on Twitter she is sworn to secrecy right now.

The Suicide Squad begins production right about now in Georgia before heading to Panama. It will be in theaters Aug. 2021.
