Report: Jonah Hill in Talks to Play Villain in Matt Reeves’ The Batman Opposite Robert Pattinson

Jonah Hill is reported to be in talks to play a villain in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman film opposite Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne.

Variety reports, “According to sources, producers had long wanted Hill for the project.” However, their report also indicates that the deal is not completed, but both sides are engaging in discussions.

It’s unclear what role Jonah Hill would play. Rumors surrounding Reeves’ The Batman point to Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin being the primary villain. One rumor indicates The Batman will not only feature Penguin, but the Riddler, Catwoman, and Firefly as well. (Related: Report: Matt Reeves’ Batman to Feature 3 Major Villains and 1 Lesser Known)

A separate rumor indicated the film would feature Penguin, Catwoman, Scarecrow, and Bane. (Related: Rumor: Polar’s Vanessa Hudgens to Play Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ Batman)

Back in May, The Hollywood Reporter indicated the film would feature the Penguin, “Matt Reeves is still tweaking his script, which is rumored to have at least two villains, the Penguin being one of them, according to sources (one person is telling us there will be around half-a-dozen villains!).” (Related: Report: Matt Reeves’ The Batman to Feature Penguin, Catwoman, and “Half-a-Dozen Villains”)

Reeves’ film is reportedly based on The Long Halloween storyline written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale. The storyline featured a number of Batman’s villains including Penguin, Solomon Grundy, Calendar Man, Two-Face, Catwoman, Carmine Falcone, Sal Maroni, Riddler, Mad Hatter, Joker, and Poison Ivy. The story sees Batman and Jim Gordon attempt to stop a series of murders committed by an unknown villain simply called Holiday. Not only are they trying to stop Holiday, but a gang war erupts in Gotham between Falcone and Maroni. (Related: Matt Reeves Gives A Huge Update on The Batman)

Reeves describes the film:

“It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”

Reeves and Pattinson’s The Batman is slated to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
