Kotaku Includes Graphic Images of Underage Fictional Characters Including Pokemon’s Misty in Article About “Video Game Porn”

Kotaku, normally a mainstream outlet for video game news, recently published a bizarre article which detailed the author’s experience watching “a bunch of video game porn” and included graphic images of underage video game characters engaging in sexual acts.

Written by Kate Gray, who regularly writes for Kotaku about video games through the lens of sexual activity in articles such as Life Got You Down? Load Up The Sims 4 And Open A Semen Café and What I Learned From Watching A Great Deal Of Overwatch Porn, Animated Video Game Porn Could Be A Lot Sexier And Less Gross claims to exist solely because Gray “called my friend and asked her if she would be down to watch a bunch of video game porn with me so I could write about it.” (Related: The Prostasia Foundation Starts Petition Aimed at Countering Recent UN Proposals on Loli and Shota Artworks)

The article proceeds to offer no discussion about any of the various facets of video game based porrnography, such as its impact on a respective games’ marketing, adult content of video game characters being regularly and consistently produced by LGBT creators, or how a character is ultimately received, opting instead to solely feature Gray’s attempts at humorous commentary and descriptions regarding the content she had viewed:

“It would have been quite an entertaining watch if it wasn’t for the utter disregard for accuracy. Hermione and Crabbe met up in the Gryffindor common room (which is unlikely, as Crabbe would need the password) and then had sex on the sofa in front of the fire. Crabbe magically removed Hermione’s uniform with a wordless spell (which is magic far too advanced for Crabbe).

She switched over to Zelda adding:

“Then, we found some Zelda porn. It’s hardly surprising that these videos turned Link into a flat-assed dude with the sexual prowess of a spoon…Link is pretty sexy with his clothes on, after all. Can’t we make him a little more of a hunk in porn?”

Then she discussed Pokemon.

“Finally, we found some animated Pokémon porn. The first scene was between Jessie, Ash, and Pikachu… It was boring. The second was between Misty, Hypno, and Lickitung. It was horrifying. Hypno uses his hypnosis powers for evil, while Lickitung slaps his big wet tongue all over Misty’s shorts, for some reason…. I don’t want to have sex with Pokémon, but surely there are more exciting scenarios than “being in a threesome with a walking tongue and a magician”?”

While the topic and content of the article seem nonsensical at best or a desperate attempt to secure views at worst, Gray confused audiences by including graphic screenshots of the scenes detailed above. These included a screenshot of Hermoine Granger engaged in intercourse with Vincent Crabbe, a screenshot of Princess Zelda from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being assaulted by a group of Bokoblins, and a cropped image of Misty from the Pokemon franchise engaging in hypnotically-induced intercourse with a Lickitung and a Hypno.

According to the established canons of these franchises, the characters featured in these screenshots are physically underage at the time of their depictions; Hermoine is no older than 17 in the PlayStation 2 Harry Potter games (as the last release was based on The Half-Blood Prince), Princess Zelda is 17, and Misty appears as depicted at 10.

While depictions of fictional underage characters engaging in sexual situations remain legal in the United States, Kotakus use of such images is profoundly hypocritical. The outlet has regularly condemned loli and shota visuals in video games, claiming that “others view them as obvious (and creepy) fig leaves [i.e. something that conceals or camouflages usually inadequately or dishonestly],” classifies the depiction of “a 700-year-old demon with the body of a young girl who, somehow, finds herself in a sexually compromising position” as “gross anime things,” and claimed that “removing the blatant sexualization of a middle schooler from [Our World is Ended]” would make the game “less offensive.”

Following the publication of the article and the subsequent offense taken to the use of the pictures, Kotaku removed the embedded images and issued an update and an apology:

“Editor’s Note: This story originally included screenshots from the Harry Potter and Pokemon animated porn parodies. We’ve removed those images after readers expressed discomfort over some of the scenes, and believe that words can sufficiently explain the material.”
