Robert Pattinson In Disbelief He Earned the Role of Batman

Matt Reeves’ search for the next Batman was an arduous one but Robert Pattinson landed the coveted role. He beat out Nicholas Hoult in a duel of eleventh-hour screen tests. Still, that he is playing such a legendary character registers as surreal for Pattinson.

In an interview with Esquire, the Twilight actor said he can’t believe he got the role and calls it “insane.”

“It’s kind of insane… I was so far away from ever thinking it was a realistic prospect. I literally do not understand how I’ve got it, at all.”

It is a change of pace. Aside from Twilight, the actor is known for lowbrow but ambitious pictures such as Cosmopolis and Good Time as opposed to major franchises.

Now he can add his name to a prestigious litany that includes Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, and Christian Bale.

When news leaked he was up for the role, Pattinson was furious, he told  Variety, because he didn’t audition yet. Nervous, he Googled himself for updates for an hour before he realized he was sitting next to Mission: Impossible — Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie, who sympathized. He, oddly enough, had a Superman pitch rejected by Warner Bros.

Pattinson will be “starting out” — how Affleck put it — as the Dark Knight in what is sizing up to be a total reboot, confirming strong rumors WB is starting over now that Affleck is out. It is rumored that Matt Reeves is looking for people of color to play Commissioner Jim Gordon and Catwoman.

Before he suits up for The Batman, Robert Pattinson’s next theatrical release is The Lighthouse costarring Willem Dafoe. Pattinson will then shoot Tenet under The Dark Knight Trilogy director Christopher Nolan.

The Batman comes out on June 25, 2021. The film is rumored to be based on The Long Halloween. Matt Reeves swears it will be a detective story in an established Gotham and it may wind up being another trilogy.
