Tom Hiddleston and Clark Gregg Support Save Daredevil Campaign

The critically acclaimed Daredevil series on Netflix was inevitably cancelled late last year. I say inevitable because this happened after two other Marvel shows, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, were cancelled.

What transpired was a domino effect of every Marvel show on the streaming service following suit. Punisher was cancelled after its two-season run. And recently Jessica Jones suffered the same fate.

What came of Daredevil‘s cancellation was a movement online to have the show return. A fan-community for the Man Without Fear started late last year with #SaveDaredevil. It’s goal? To have the show come back from cancellation, with all the original cast. Since the petition started, it has gained quite a bit of traction from fans of the show. Plus the cast of the show have been all-in.

However, even stars of other shows have chipped in their support recently. And that includes Loki actor Tom Hiddleston, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actor Clark Gregg.

The Shared Universe/A Small World

Hiddleston co-stars with Daredevil actor Charlie Cox in Betrayal, a Broadway production that opened in early September of this year.

When asked by some fans to vocalize his support for the campaign, he had this to say to the camera:

And over the weekend, Clark Gregg, who has played Agent Phil Coulson for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in both Television (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and various films in the MCU, the most recent being Captain Marvel), has also thrown in his support for the #SaveDaredevil movement on his Instagram story:

Ironically, Gregg was also part of the crowd this weekend in attendance at the Broadway show Betrayal. He has also been a supporter of the series since its cancellation in November last year:

The Last Defender

Netflix was axing many shows under Jeph Loeb early last year. The critically panned Iron Fist was cancelled after its second season. Luke Cage was also axed after its second season. Only Daredevil and Jessica Jones enjoyed three seasons before being cancelled. All shows ended with somewhat cliffhangers, Iron Fist ended with Danny Rand possessing the chi guns of Orson Randall. And Luke Cage ended with its title character becoming the new head of Harlem’s Paradise, serving as a sort of shady gatekeeper for the city.

Daredevil had a good run for its three seasons, completing the story of Matt Murdock and his attempts to defeat Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. The show had very little in place for a cliffhanger unlike the above two shows, and ended on a high note. But it did manage to tease that a main villain Bullseye would return. It also teased Doctor Oyama, inventor of the adamantium bonding process. Fans dreamed for a possible tie-in with the X-Men.

A Movement Without Fear

And those nerds still dream to this day. Enough to have meetups and continue to garner support for their movement in hopes that Marvel Studios will listen to their request.

This weekend, the group had an event during New York Comic Con. Charlie Cox, Marvel executive Joe Quesada, and co-star Royce Johnson, who plays Detective Brett Mahoney crashed the party much to the joy of those attending.

Currently the main cast of the show are reportedly under contractual agreements where the iterations of their respective characters cannot show up in any other media two years from their shows’ ending.

Since Daredevil ended last November, it has almost been a year since its cancellation. That means another year of waiting to see what happens. And fans of the Marvel show will continue to hold out hope that the character will appear in other media, perhaps to defend Peter Parker against false allegations by Mysterio and J. Jonah Jameson, or on opposite sides of the courtroom to Jennifer Walters, A.K.A. She-Hulk.

Daredevil is no stranger to appearing alongside Hulk characters on TV. The the last time we saw the Man Without Fear next to a green-skinned Hulk was back in 1989. Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno played David Bruce Banner and the Hulk respectively while Rex Smith played the blind lawyer Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil.

Fans are hoping Charlie Cox will take up the role again in a Marvel Studios title. Perhaps with a solo film or a Disney Plus series. And Kingpin villain Vincent D’Onofrio has been itching to tangle with Spider-Man.

Here’s to hoping we can get to that level of cross-over like in the comics.
