Vic Mignogna Encourages Fans to “Do Enormous Things to Encourage and Make People’s Lives Better All Around You” During HawaiiCon 2019 Interview

During an interview at HawaiiCon 2019, given prior to the dismissal of his remaining claims in his defamation lawsuit against Funimation and fellow voice actors, Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Fullmetal Alchemist voice actor Vic Mignogna urged positivity from his fans, encouraging “everyone to be voices for good.”

At the recent HawaiiCon 2019, The Kasanova Podcast host Mekel Kasanova sat down with Mignogna, who was in attendance both as a convention guest and to present the grand prize to the winner of the Dragon Ball FighterZ tournament hosted by HawaiiCon and Kasanova, for an exclusive interview.

Throughout the course of the interview, Kasanova speaks with Mignogna about his lengthy career, discussing topics such as Mignogna’s origins as a musician, the creation of Star Trek Continues, and his first meeting with Star Trek legend William Shatner.

At the beginning of the interview, conducted after the first round of Mignogna’s claims were dismissed in court but prior to the full dismissal, Mignogna describes why he feels “blessed beyond what I deserve” regarding his career:

“I am blessed. I am blessed beyond what I deserve. I have always felt such gratitude to get to do what I do. Because, as I’ve told people many times in many interviews and panels over the years, I didn’t set out to become a voice actor. I didn’t expect that, I didn’t go knockin’ on production doors and sendin’ out demos and beatin’ the pavement. An opportunity arose and I took it, having no idea where it would lead. And here we are. I daily have to kind of pinch myself mentally just to remind myself that even when things are rough, even when things are tough or bad or unfortunate, there is so much to be grateful for.”

At the conclusion of the interview, Kasanova asks Mignogna if he had anything he would like to say to his fans, to which Mignogna addresses his fans and warns them of the “negativity in the world” and encourages them to be “voices for good.”

Kasanova: “Is there anything you want to leave the fans with today? Any message you want to say?”

Mignogna: “Yes, always. There’s a lot of negativity in the world. Don’t let it suck you in. It’s easy, it’s quick, and it’s cheap and you may get a quick rush, but it does nothing but hurt, and I want to encourage everyone to be voices for good. To sow positivity and encouragement into people.

There are so many people out there, so desperate just to be acknowledged. Just to feel like they matter to someone. And that desire to mean something is so strong that it literally drives some people to be negative, or to talk garbage, or to do negative things just to get attention.”

Mignogna then equated those who engage in “negative” behavior “just to get attention,” such as proponents of cancel culture, with “children.”

“I’ll never forget a psychology class I took in college. The professor was doing a lecture one day on children. It was a general psych class, but I’ll never forget this one thing he said. He said ‘Children would prefer negative attention to no attention at all.’ Think about that. Why do kids act up sometimes? Because they want attention. And they would rather be scolded by their parents, because at least they’re paying attention to them now. They would prefer negative attention to being ignored completely. And I think that drives a lot of people in their desire to feel a value. To feel some sense of self-worth.”

Mignogna would conclude his message by encouraging his fans to “do enormous things to encourage and make people’s lives better all around you” and thanking them for their continued support:

“Don’t let yourself get pulled into that. Every single person, wherever they are, you can do enormous things to encourage and make people’s lives better all around you. So be that person. That would be my greatest wish and encouragement to the fans out there.

And thank you. Thank you so much for your encouragement to me over the years. I’ve never imagined that things would happen that would happen over the years for me, and I’m extremely grateful, most of all for you, your support, and your encouragement over the years. So, thank you.”
