Brie Larson on Captain Marvel 2: “I Don’t Really Know What Job I’m Going To Do Next”

Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson detailed that she doesn’t know when the next Captain Marvel film will come out or what her next job will be.

Larson spoke with Variety’s Kate Aurthur who asked her if she knew when she was doing the next Captain Marvel film. Larson responded:

“No. I don’t really know what job I’m going to do next, which is very exciting. I don’t even know what my life’s gonna be!”

Larson added:

“And most of this year, you know, I had to do the press tour. But then the last half of the year, I’ve just been focusing way more on just doing what I want to do that’s completely outside of my job. I just feel like it’s been this incubation time. Whether it’s incubation because I’m developing projects, and also incubation myself, being, like: OK, I’m going to be turning 30. I’ve been working a lot. I need to just like change it up and see what’s there for me — see who I am now. And which ways that I want to grow.”

Larson’s answer is surprising given how Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige raved about Larson’s Captain Marvel being the new face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Back in March, Feige told Uproxx that Larson and Captain Marvel would take the lead of the MCU.

“When we found out that Brie Larson might be interested in joining our world, we had a number of meetings. She was a huge fan of the character in the comics. One of the highlights of my career at Marvel was introducing her at Comic-Con and having her come out on stage and stand there with literally almost everybody else from our movies. There she was at the forefront, and it was a great foreshadowing – not just for how audiences are going to embrace Brie as this character, but also for how Captain Marvel is about to take the lead and be at the forefront of the entire Cinematic Universe.”

A Captain Marvel film was also not announced for Marvel’s Phase 4 when they rolled out their plans at San Diego Comic Con in July. However, a third Spider-Man film wasn’t on that list either, but it was just added recently after Marvel and Sony reached a deal to keep Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in the MCU.

A second Captain Marvel is more than likely going to happen. The Hollywood Reporter reports Larson signed a seven-picture deal with Marvel Studios. They even noted that the deal “locks her into multiple franchises.” The actress has already appeared in two films with Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, meaning there are still five films left. One expects at least one of those films will be a Captain Marvel sequel. But the details of the deal aren’t clear and its quite possible it could involve TV as well as films.

It’s more than likely Larson’s Captain Marvel will have something to do with the recently announced Ms. Marvel Disney Plus TV show. In the comics, the new Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan is inspired to become a hero by Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel. In fact, when she first realizes she has Inhuman abilities she transforms appearance to look like Carol.

The first Captain Marvel film did pretty well at the box office. The movie made $426.8 million domestically and $1.1 billion worldwide. The Numbers also reports Captain Marvel is the third highest selling DVD and Blu-ray in the United States in 2019 with over 2.7 million units shipped. The only films ahead of it are Avengers: Endgame and Aquaman.
