Singer Alicia Keys Wants Her Sons to Express “Feminine Energy” Without Judgment

Singer and musician Alicia Keys revealed she wants her sons to express “feminine energy” without judgment.

In a video posted to Instagram, the Grammy award-winning singer and artist behind Quantum of Solace’s Another Way to Die, Alicia Keys was saddened that her son didn’t want to be seen in public wearing a rainbow manicure. The singer would go on to blame society, not allowing men to express their “feminine energy.”

In the video, she calls out stereotypes and how people judge others:

Keys explains in the video that her son originally wanted to have a rainbow manicure, explaining that he told the manicurist that he wanted rainbow colors on his nails. However, after he got the manicure he expressed he did not want to keep it.

Alicia Keys explains:

“The other day I went to the nail salon with Genesis. He’s in the chair and he’s like I want rainbow. So he tells the lady that he wants rainbow colors on his nails. And she brings all these colors and she paints each nail a different color. And after he painted his nails, he looked at me and said, ‘Mommy, I don’t this on my nails'”

She continues:

“And I was like, ‘Why? You were so sure, you are good.’ And he was like, ‘People are not going to like it.'”

This struck the singer as she was shocked by her son’s concern of how others in public would view him with rainbow nails:

“Can you believe this? Four years old! He’s four and he already understands the concept that someone’s going to judge him because he chose rainbow color on his nails. And I told him, ‘Why? Nobody’s going to judge you. They are going to love it. It’s so cool. Look how creative you are. Look how amazing. You had this idea. You chose it. You liked it You do it. Who cares what anybody else says.”

The singer went on to explain to her son that men also paint their nails as a means of encouragement, hoping that by saying that he’d be more receptive to the idea of going out in public with his nails painted:

“And I said, ‘Plus you know a lot of guys paint their nails. This is not like some strange thing that you only do.’ He was like, ‘Really? I was like, ‘Yeah – so many. So many.’ And that made him feel better, but it just got me to thinking how completely judged we are all the time.”

Alicia would go on in the video post to explain that she believes humans have both masculine and feminine energies within them.

“The way I see it is that there is masculine and there is feminine energies inside of us all. That’s period. That’s just how it is. It gets concerning to me that we can’t explore these different sides of ourselves. You know these different energies that are within us.”

Keys then explains she has expressed these dual energies herself, and wants it to be okay for her sons to express their feminine energies.

“And even for me myself, I oftentimes express the masculine energy that’s inside of me. And it’s very natural to me. That’s how I feel. And all the time if that happens there’s judgments, and there’s the stereotypes, and there’s all the energy that comes toward that and for my boys — you know similar, if they want to express the feminine energy that’s inside of them, there’s all these judgments, and all these roles, and stereotypes, and vibes.”

She then notes that due to current social standards people aren’t allowed to express their other side, which leaves her frustrated:

“It’s really frustrating to me. I’m actually really, really frustrated about it. And I ask myself why is it that? Like why can’t we just express the different energies that are inside of us?”

She finally concludes saying:

“You know this is a very normal, ancient, powerful, spiritual understanding that we all have masculine and feminine energies and we should be able to explore and express them however we want to. ”

What do you think of Key’s Instagram video? Does she make good points, or is the singer missing some beats?

Alicia Keys will be hosting the Grammys for the second year in a row on January 26th, 2020.
