Star Trek: Picard’s Patrick Stewart “Embarrassed” By UK’s Brexit Vote

Star Trek: Picard’s Patrick Stewart didn’t mince any words when it came to his opinion about the United Kindom’s exit from the European Union.

In two recent events, he made it very clear that he is embarrassed by the result of the 2016 Brexit referendum.

First, at an anti-Brexit rally in London on October 21, he would declare the initial Brexit vote was not democratic.

Stewart stated, “Let me be clear. There was nothing democratic about that referendum.”

In his speech he also says, “People weren’t just misled, they were lied to.”

In a separate speech at Paris Comic Con while promoting Star Trek: Picard, Stewart declared he was embarrassed of being British due to the result of the Brexit vote.

He addressed the crowd in attendance saying, “This is in fact, this weekend is a very, very bitter experience for me, in many respects. Because for the last 35 years I have been so proud to belong to a country that has been part of the European Union.”

Stewart continued, “I am embarrassed to stand here in front of you representing a country that is seeking to break that invaluable connection.”

He adds, “Well more than half of the population of the United Kingdom wants to stay in the European Union.”

Stewart then credits the collapse of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall to the European Union.

“The Berlin Wall came down. The Soviet Union ended its dominance and control over so many nations. Apartheid was ended in South Africa. The Good Friday agreement brought together, although there is still problems, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. And the European Union is all part of that movement. And it is a disgrace that individuals in my country are attempting to separate us.”

Patrick Stewart has been active in politics for some time. Back in 2009, the actor told The Independent he inherited socialism from his father.

“I wrote in an e-mail to somebody the other day that in a way what I’d like to do now is write another article, listing all the great things I got from my father: discipline, organisation, ambition, storytelling and socialism.”

In the same interview he described himself as “an absolute fundamental, emotional socialist.”

More recently, following the election of Donald Trump the actor has turned up the dial on his activism.

In 2017, he revealed on The View that he was applying for American citizenship specifically because of Trump’s election.

Stewart stated:

“I’m not a [U.S.] citizen. However, there is, maybe it’s the only good thing, as the result of this election: I am now applying for citizenship. Because I want to be an American too,…All of my friends in Washington said, ‘There is one thing you can do. Fight, fight, oppose, oppose.’”

You can catch Patrick Stewart’s return to the Federation in Star Trek: Picard which debuts January 23rd, 2020.
