Rumor: Sophia Di Martino to Play Female Loki in Disney+ MCU Series

Marvel Studios has been doing some swaps of traditional characters over the years. For Nick Fury, instead of the white Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos, they went with the Ultimates version of Nick Fury and cast Samuel L. Jackson for the role. For Captain Marvel, they went against doing the Kree superhero male version, and went for Carol Danvers and swapped the male predecessor for Annette Bening, although the role was originally written for a man.

And now we have new reports coming out that the Loki series on Disney+ will not only have a female version of the character show up at some point, but that the studio has already cast the person to play the role.

Death-Defying Loki

The Loki series will explore the fate of Loki after he stole the fumbled Tesseract and dipped out after being caught at the end of the original Avengers film in 2012. The synopsis so far reads that the series will “follow the titular trickster as he pops up throughout human history, proving to be an unlikely influence on events.”

Deadline reports the show recently cast Sophia Di Martino in an unknown role to play opposite Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. However, they believe she will play a female version of Loki.  They report:

“One source close to the production hints that Di Martino may in fact portray a female incarnation of Loki and, in effect share the role with Hiddleston.”

Knowing the god of mischief, it could very well be another form he takes on as he walks among mortals in a parallel timeline separate from the one he gets killed in during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. It’s also possible he could be taking on the female form as he attempts to avoid detection from Captain America, who might be hunting him down.

A female version of Loki is a rather new occurrence in Marvel Comics. The character appeared in Thor #9 by J. Michael Staczynski and Olivier Coipel as a reincarnated version of Loki.

However, in Thor #12 it would later be revealed that Loki had not actually been reincarnated, but instead took possession of Sif’s body in order to plot to bring down his brother Thor.

In Loki: Agent of Asgard #5 in 2014, Loki would reveal that he can change his shape as long as it’s him.

In an interview with MTV news, Hiddleston expressed interest in taking Loki in new directions, facing challenges unlike any seen in the films for the character. But he kept details about the series very close to the chest.

Hiddleston stated:

“I know this character now. I feel that the audience knows him. And playing him — and playing him truthfully, but presenting him with new challenges, which then I’d have to change him in different ways, is the most exciting aspect of it. You’ve got his very specific gifts. His intelligence, treachery, his mischief, his magic, and then seeing him come up against more formidable opponents, the likes of which he has never seen or known. I wish I could tell you what happens, but I can’t.”

Loki will have six episodes, and will stream on the Disney+ service in 2021. The show will tie in with Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness.

Sophia Di Martino

Di Martino has had a number of roles throughout the years. She mostly took on supporting roles. She most recently starred in the film Yesterday, that sees a man wake up in a world where the music of the Beatles does not exist. She played Carol. She also recently starred in the TV series Flowers as Amy. She also had guest appearances as Lily in Into the Badlands.

Given the direction the Marvel Cinematic Universe appears to be taking with the announcement of Jane Foster becoming Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, and Kevin Feige declaring Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel will be the face of the MCU moving forward, Sophia Di Martino could be the new face of Loki moving forward in the MCU.

Marvel’s Disney+ shows definitely seem to be a passing of the torch from male characters to female characters as they’ve made abundantly clear in their Hawkeye promos with Kate Bishop. It’s not that hard to imagine this Loki show trying to follow suit.

And it’s quite possible Marvel Studios wants to make that A-Force tease in Avengers: Endgame a reality for its future films and series.
