Rumor: Disney May Be Developing a PG-13 Predator TV Series for Disney+

Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox assets brought the Predator franchise into their portfolio and far from leaving it to gather dust in the vault, they just might know what to do with the interstellar game hunter.

We Got This Covered is reporting their sources tell them the House of Mouse is developing a series around the Predator and its mythology. Featuring new characters and a new story, everything would tie together though they don’t know exactly how overall.

Back in August, reporter Eric Vespe indicated Disney+ would only feature PG-13 fare.

I asked about R-rated content, if any of Fox’s more adult fare will make it on to Disney+ and he said that Disney+ will all be PG-13 or softer. I wonder if this will be their weakness that other streaming services can exploit.

That would mean Disney’s attempt at rebooting the property would connect to Shane Black’s The Predator, an effort at a sequel and a new beginning in the franchise that left most feeling disappointed. But, such being the case, they could choose to ignore Black’s movie entirely – which wouldn’t bother anybody.

As we know, the Predator’s continuity and mythology are expansive with branches connecting to Ridley Scott’s Alien movies. First teased in Predator 2, a small Easter egg at the end of the film spawned Alien vs. Predator video games, comics by Dark Horse, and two movies in the 2000s – AVP and AVP: Requiem.

WGTC claims their sources are reliable and passed along the stories another Scream is in development and Bill Murray will be in Ghostbusters 3. Both reports proved accurate. Here’s how they put it:

“According to our sources – the same ones who said a new Scream movie is in the works, and that Bill Murray will be in Ghostbusters 3, both of which have since been confirmed – the studio is currently developing a series based off of the titular alien that’s set in the same world as the other films. It’ll feature new characters, along with an entirely unique story, though, and while it’s unclear how exactly it’ll tie into the overall mythology, there will definitely be some connections there. Kind of like what we saw with Shane Black’s take on the franchise last year.”

Disney’s reported plans could hinge on a couple of court cases over character rights. The rights to Friday the 13th are in the most pronounced legal battle between Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham.

And there are copious properties also in legal limbo: per Hollywood Reporter, Terminator, Beetlejuice, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, several Stephen King novels, and Predator have the potential of reverting to their creators – “derailing Disney’s plans for a show” as WGTC notes.

Going further, WGTC says Disney execs aren’t worried and are focused on reviving a franchise. The Predator series started in the 1980s and has six films to its credit, some better than others. There’s also been multiple video game and comic book tie-ins.
