Robert Pattinson Loves Batman’s History But Says He Isn’t a Superhero Since He Has No Powers

Twilight and The Lighthouse star Robert Pattinson, who won the honor of being the next Batman, admits to a fascination with the character and his history but the actor has a unique perspective on Bats’s ethics and superhero status.

In a sitdown with Felix Geist of Today, Pattinson stumbled over his words and paused quite a bit, but said he loves the ways Batman’s been played over the years and he “really” feels the “reverence” at Warner Bros.:

“I love every iteration of how it’s been played. I feel like everyone has really looked after the character over its history. There’s a lot of reverence for it, you can really feel it at the studio.”

He expressed praise for director Matt Reeves’s vision and said, “I’m very eager to get started on it.” Cameras roll almost as soon as 2019 turns to 2020 so he will soon.

The topic then drifted to whether or not Batman is a superhero. Geist thinks so – as do the majority of fans. Pattinson, however, sees the Dark Knight through a different lens and doesn’t consider him one at all.

Geist asked him if he accepted the role because he “wanted to be a superhero?” Pattinson – perhaps channeling previous interviews and having a little fun – gritted his teeth but smiled, declaring again “Batman’s not a superhero.”

Pattinson added:

“It doesn’t count. You need to have like magical powers to be a superhero.”

That must mean Edward Cullen and Harry Potter are superheroes by definition. Geist got Pattinson to agree maybe the cape makes Batman a superhero to a degree.

Robert Pattinson is doubling down on the comments he made elsewhere. Speaking with The New York Times in October, he said Batman is “complicated” and “not a hero”:

“Batman’s not a hero, though. He’s a complicated character. I don’t think I could ever play a real hero — there’s always got to be something a little bit wrong.”

He added Batman has dubious morals:

“His morality is a little bit off. He’s not the golden boy, unlike almost every other comic-book character. There is a simplicity to his worldview, but where it sits is strange, which allows you to have more scope with the character.”

Geist then wondered how Pattinson is preparing for such a role. He didn’t have much of an answer so Geist followed with how taking on a big part will affect his life.

Will it mean a return to the paparazzi and microscope Twilight’s success placed him under? Pattinson replied with a laugh he doesn’t think so because he’s older now and “boring.”

The Batman’s cast has grown quickly since Pattinson nabbed the lead in May. Recently added were Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone.
