Colin Trevorrow Confirms Leaked Star Wars Concept Art Was From Duel of the Fates

The Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow confirmed the leaked Star Wars concept art was from Duel of the Fates.

Trevorrow, who was originally tapped to direct Star Wars Episode IX and subsequently split ways with the studio in September 2017 took to Twitter to confirm the authenticity of the concept art.

He wrote, “Yes, this is from Duel of the Fates.”

He would correct the original leak of the concept art, which detailed that R2-D2 would be killed. Trevorrow stated, “But I’d never kill R2…he just took a bad hit. Happens to all of us.”

Trevorrow split from Lucasfilm in September 2017 with Lucasfilm releasing a statement that read:

“Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX.’ Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.”

A report in the Wall Street Journal indicated that Trevorrow was actually dismissed by Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy. That report indicated “Ms. Kennedy grew unhappy with his work on the script.”

That report continued, “But Ms. Kennedy was unhappy with drafts Mr. Trevorrow co-wrote and one written by “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” playwright Jack Thorne for him to direct.”

Trevorrow was also unhappy with the script and requested to try again. However, the report indicates that Kennedy fired him instead.

Rumors in March 2018 indicated that Trevorrow left the film and was not fired due to Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi. Those rumors detailed by Flickering Myth indicate Trevorrow wanted Luke Skywalker to be alive in Episode IX. The rumor stated, “He strongly disagreed with killing Luke off in 8 when he had just been re-introduced.”

It continued, “Luke and Leia were to be a pivotal part of his script, with Leia’s Force affinity revealed in a much more brother/sister way that was apparently going to be ‘beautiful and tragic.’”

Not only did this rumor indicate that Trevorrow wanted Luke to still be alive, but he also wanted Snoke to be alive as well.

“Second, he wanted Snoke to live, as his back story was to be more discussed.”

The rumor indicates that Kathleen Kennedy wanted Luke to die instead of Trevorrow’s idea of having him walk into the sunset and pass the baton to Rey. Trevorrow pushed back on the idea of killing Luke and was subsequently fired.

In May 2018, Trevorrow spoke to Empire about the split saying, “I don’t want to talk too much about it because I don’t want to affect the way that fans get to see these films.”

He added, “When we were kids, these movies came to us from far away. They were a gift. And the more we talk about how they’re made, the more it reveals that they’re just movies.”

Trevorrow continued, “But they’re not just movies, they’re more than that. Beyond that, I got the opportunity to tell a story that is a celebration of everything I believe in, I got to tell it to George Lucas and I got to tell it to Luke Skywalker, and those are experiences I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

It’s more than likely there is more concept art out there from Trevorrow’s planned film. Whether or not we get to see, time will tell.

What do you make of Trevorrow confirming the concept art was from Duel of the Fates? Would you rather have seen his vision than what we got in The Rise of Skywalker?
