Sonic The Hedgehog’s Rotten Tomatoes And Metacritic Critic Scores Revealed

Sonic the Hedgehog’s Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores have been revealed just in time for the movie to hit theaters this weekend.

Rotten Tomatoes

Sonic the Hedgehog currently has a 70% on Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer with an average rating of 6 out of 10 from 56 reviews. There are 39 fresh reviews and 17 rotten reviews.

However, the film receives much lower scores when you look at Rotten Tomatoes Top Critics. The Top Critics score sits at 53% with a 5.62 out of 10 average rating from 19 reviews. There are 10 fresh reviews and 9 rotten reviews.

Here’s what the critics on Rotten Tomatoes are saying:

Allison Rose  a Top Critic, at FlickDirect gives the film a 4 out of 5. She writes, “The movie pays homage to the game that will have fans reminiscing about their childhoods while offers enough pop culture and modern technological touches to entice younger generations.

Matt Donato, a Top Critic, at We Got This Covered gives the movie a 7 out of 10. He writes, “Sonic the Hedgehog blazes by lesser video game adaptations that have thus defined the subgenre’s lackluster reputation by succeeding as both a sincere children’s film and blue hedgehog origin that fans will applaud.”

Christie Cronan, a Top Critic, at Raising Whasians gives the movie a 7 out of 10. She writes, “Sonic the Hedgehog movie is the visual reminder that every underdog (under-hedgehog?) can have his day & rise up from heels of failure. One questionable scene for parents of kids, but overall what a family-centered movie should be.”

Jordan Farley, a Top Critic, at Total Film gives the movie a 3 out of 5. He writes, “A relic of the ’90s in more ways than one, Sonic offers frenetic fun for younger viewers, and in Jim Carrey’s preposterous Robotnik an enjoyable shot of nostalgia for adults.”

Adam Graham, a Top Critic, at Detroit News gives the film a B rating. He writes, “”Sonic” isn’t transcendent family entertainment but it gets the job done, and Carrey’s manic shtick elevates the proceedings.”

Mark Kennedy, a Top Critic, at the Associated Press gives the movie a 3.5 out of 4. He writes, “Nailed it!” screams Sonic at one point and that might be a fitting summary for the film.”

Amon Warmann, a Top Critic, at Empire Magazine gives the movie a 2 out of 5. He writes, “An on-form Jim Carrey can’t stop Sonic’s live-action debut from feeling like a missed opportunity. If the teased sequels do materialise, here’s hoping the storytelling levels up.”

Spencer Perry, a Top Critic, at ComicBook.com gives the movie a 3 out of 5. He writes, “Sonic the Hedgehog succeeds where so many other video game adaptations fail because it captures the spirit of the games and the character. It doesn’t matter that it’s not a 1:1 adaptation of the games.”

Sean Keane, a Top Critic, at CNET gives the movie a Fresh score. He writes, “It’s a shame Sonic the Hedgehog’s forgettable jokes don’t live up to its visuals, but it’s a decent cinematic start for the blue blur and leaves me with the hope of an even more adventurous sequel down the line.”

Danny Leigh, a Top Critic, at Financial Times gives the movie a 2 out of 5. He writes, “Director Jeff Fowler gives the kids Spielberg-isms and scatology. Their parents get gags about out-of-town weddings. Thank heavens for Carrey.”

Anton Bitel, a Top Critic, at Little White Lies gives the movie a 3 out of 5. He writes, “Fast and fun, but forgettable.”

Johnny Oleksinski, a Top Critic, at the New York Post gives the movie a 3 out of 4. He writes, “If the title makes you wince, know the movie is a lot better than it deserves to be. You’ll actually care about what happens to the prickly blue dude, even if you never cared about getting to zone seven.”

Metacritic

On Metacritic, as is typically the case, the movie has a much lower score.

The Metascore for Sonic the Hedgehog currently sits at a 45 from 24 reviews. There are 6 positive reviews, 13 mixed reviews, and 5 negative.

Here’s what the Metacritic critics are saying:

Yolanda Machado at TheWrap gives the movie a 75. She writes, “Sonic the Hedgehog might not become a kid-movie classic, but it makes for a great little getaway to enjoy with the whole family. That, in itself, earns a golden ring.”

Peter Hartlaub at the San Francisco Chronicle gives the movie a 75. He writes, “Best of all, the laughs often arrive in small moments, not in the obvious ones.”

Kristen Page-Kirby at The Washington Post gives the movie a 75. She writes, “In the end, “Sonic” is quippy without being mean, and sweet without being sappy, making this a trip that’s well worth taking.”

Oliver Jones at Observer gives the movie a 75. He writes, “In what is something of a movie miracle or at the very least an unexpected surprise, this adaptation of the much-loved Sega video game franchise launched nearly 30 years ago as a direct assault on Nintendo’s leaping plumber Mario, largely presses the all the right buttons—and even does so in the right order.”

Akeem Lawanson at IGN gives the movie a 70. He writes, “Sonic’s first foray into live-action is a fast-paced joyride that’ll ring in entertainment for both fans and children.”

Bilge Ebiri at Vulture gives the movie a 60. He writes, “Carrey is the film’s most prized weapon, letting us wallow in the ridiculousness of this whole enterprise without ever holding himself above it. Quite the contrary, he overcommits in the best possible way.”

John DeFore at The Hollywood Reporter gives the movie a 60. He writes, “While Fowler keeps the story moving efficiently, Marsden’s easy geniality prevents the simple narrative from feeling rote. Carrey gets a moment or two to cut loose.”

Molly Freeman at ScreenRant gives the movie a 60. She writes, “Sonic the Hedgehog is a fairly middling family-friendly adventure movie, but a comparably good video game adaptation the belies a great deal of potential for a stronger, even more ambitious sequel.”

Tom Girerson at ScreenDaily gives the movie a 50. He writes, “Despite some sweetness and playful absurdity, this big-screen outing feels mostly like derivative, fussed-over product.”

Brian Truitt at USA Today gives the movie a 50. He writes, “The film is fine, familiar fare for gamers and children: Sonic sprints, Carrey mugs, but the creative juices run out quickly.”

David Ehrlich at IndieWire gives the movie a 42. He writes, “And you thought fixing Sonic’s teeth would make this movie any less of a nightmare.”

Roger Moore at Movie Nation gives the movie a 38. He writes, “The end product isn’t remotely as bad as one might fear.”

Donald Clarke at The Irish Times gives the movie a 20. He writes, “It’s not quite as bad as the awful trailer threatened. Just dull, bland and pointless.”
