Rumor: Sinestro Corps War Coming To HBO Max’s Green Lantern

The first major storyline for the Green Lantern series, produced by Greg Berlanti, coming to HBO Max could be based on The Sinestro Corps War.

Scooper Mikey Sutton shared in his Geekosity Facebook page that “Berlanti is planning to adapt the Sinestro Corps War for HBO Max.”

The budget will be “superior” to the 2011 Green Lantern movie – co-written by Berlanti – starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Mark Strong as Sinestro. Moreover, the tone will be serious, unlike the film.

Sutton says the usual human Lanterns of Sector 2814 – that being Hal Jordan, Kyle Rayner, and John Stewart – will be key to the story.

He notes too Arrow’s John Diggle, whose surname is also Stewart, played by David Ramsey has the potential of crossing over to HBO Max but alleged plans for him on The CW may take precedence.

Diggle received a box from outer space with glowing green contents in Arrow’s finale, implying he is anointed the Green Lantern of Earth-Prime in the Arrowverse.

A show of his own is rumored as pitched or perhaps in development at CW, and he will be a lead character if Berlanti reworks Blackest Night as a crossover saga.

While not entirely confirmed, the scoop was covered as well by Matt Jarbo of YouTube’s 3 Buck Theater which pointed out a grain of truth in it reported by Deadline.

Sarah Aubrey – Head of Original Content at HBO Max – divulged to The Critics Association press corps in January Green Lantern will “span several decades [and] focus on two stories about Green Lanterns on Earth” and go “into the Sinestro story.”

Deadline also mentioned Sinestro was once a Green Lantern but got “dishonorably discharged,” and that he’s “the archenemy of Hal Jordan and founder of the Sinestro Corps.”

Jarbo theorizes, between Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night (with additional lifting from Green Lantern: Rebirth for the show’s origin narrative), Berlanti is trying to reintroduce Sinestro in a big way that is overdue.

That aside, we and 3 Buck Theater warn you to apply the usual salt so don’t get your hopes up, even though this is a cool idea.

Published in 2007, Sinestro Corps War is a lauded storyline co-written by Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons. In it, the Lanterns of Earth lead the GLC in an interstellar war against Sinestro and his yellow-ring-equipped Corps who seek to rule the universe through fear.

Consisting of an 11-part main story in the pages Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corp plus “Tales of the Sinestro Corps” one-shots and a Blue Beetle tie-in, Sinestro Corps War was drawn by Ivan Reis, Patrick Gleason, and Ethan Van Sciver.
