Rumor: Sony And Marvel To Introduce Bisexual Spider-Man

A new rumor details that Marvel and Sony want to introduce a bisexual Spider-Man in an upcoming Spider-Verse live-action.

The rumor comes from We Got This Covered, who detail that this bisexual Spider-Man would be introduced in a possible Spider-Verse live-action film. Not only do they want a bisexual Spider-Man, but according to the rumor they want the bisexual Peter Parker to be Andrew Garfield’s character from the Amazing Spider-Man films.

Garfield expressed his interest in seeing a gay Spider-Man back in 2013 when he was promoting Amazing Spider-Man 2.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Garfield detailed a conversation he had with producer Matt Tolmach:

“I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ. And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?  It’s hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can’t he be gay? Why can’t he be into boys?”

Andrew Garfield hasn’t been the only Spider-Man actor to support the idea of a gay or bisexual Spider-Man.

Current Spider-Man and Peter Parker actor Tom Holland expressed his support of a gay Spider-Man when he was asked about the possibility while promoting Spider-Man: Far From Home.

When asked if there could be a gay Spider-Man, Holland responded, “Yeah, of course.”

When asked how soon a gay Spider-Man could show up in the MCU, Holland responded, “I can’t talk about the future of the character because, honestly, I don’t know, and it’s out of my hands. But I do know a lot about the future of Marvel, and they are going to be representing lots of different people in the next few years.”

He added, “The world isn’t as simple as a straight white guy. It doesn’t end there, and these films need to represent more than one type of person. I met a lady in Texas who had a young boy in her school who likes to wear women’s clothes. He was bullied. Then I dressed as Rihanna [for a fabulous performance on the TV show Lip Sync Battle], and she told me that boy felt so much more confident because he saw Spider-Man do it. That was really touching. Me just doing a dance routine helped someone.”

While the actors seemingly want a gay Spider-Man, it goes against the wishes of Marvel Comics legend and Spider-Man creator Stan Lee. Lee commented on the possibility of a gay Spider-Man after leaked documents revealed Spider-Man and specifically Peter Parker could not be homosexual. The document reads, “Spidey should be male, not smoke tobacco nor abuse alcohol, and not be a homosexual (unless Marvel has portrayed that alter ego as a homosexual).

Lee would explain his own opinion on the matter, “I wouldn’t mind if, Peter Parker had originally been black, a Latino, an Indian or anything else, that he stay that way. But we originally made him white. I don’t see any reason to change that.”

He added, “I think the world has a place for gay superheroes, certainly. But again, I don’t see any reason to change the sexual proclivities of a character once they’ve already been established. I have no problem with creating new, homosexual superheroes.”

Lee continued, “It has nothing to do with being anti-gay, or anti-black, or anti-Latino, or anything like that. Latino characters should stay Latino. The Black Panther should certainly not be Swiss. I just see no reason to change that which has already been established when it’s so easy to add new characters. I say create new characters the way you want to. Hell, I’ll do it myself.”

Given Lee’s comments and the previously leaked documents regarding how Sony could depict Spider-Man it’s hard to imagine there is any validity to this rumor especially after those leaked documents confirmed Peter Parker could not be homosexual.

However, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Marvel Comics, Sony, and Marvel Studios to create a new Spidey-like character that is gay and have Garfield play that character. However, I don’t see Garfield reprising his role as Peter Parker from Amazing Spider-Man.

What do you make of this new rumor? Do you think Sony and Marvel Studios are looking at introducing a bisexual Spider-Man into the MCU?
