Wonder Woman Is Gay in the Superman: Red Son Animated Film

Wonder Woman appears in Superman: Red Son – the animated feature adaptation of the graphic novel – and there is an LGBT twist that comes out when the Soviet-raised Kal-El tries to court her.

CBR reports Diana Prince, the primary diplomat for Themyscira, is “the voice for the global LGBT community.” Coming from an island of women, the opposite sex doesn’t interest her in this Elseworlds universe.

The revelation happens after Superman feels a spark of attraction with Diana during a dance and goes in for a kiss when he takes her aside on a balcony. CBR describes how and why the reveal is made:

“After overthrowing Stalin as Russian leader, Superman wants to make the USSR the beacon for world peace, and he invites Diana of Themyscira to visit. Her mother, Queen Hippolyta, remains skeptical and doesn’t want to leave Paradise Island, which means Superman is free to court Diana. As they dance, it seems a romance is brewing, but when Superman takes Diana to the balcony for some fresh air, the truth is revealed.

Superman attempts to kiss Diana but she gently stops him. He apologizes, but she reveals he has nothing to be sorry about, as she senses he believed there was a spark between them. However, she admits she lives on an island populated by women, and that’s the only gender that interests her. ‘I come from an island of all women,’ Diana says. ‘Work it out for yourself.’”

CBR then notes Superman takes the news in stride, relieved he doesn’t have to consummate a relationship that’s only a formality to him and that he can concentrate on the threats of war and Lex Luthor without the distraction of romance.

He and Diana laugh about it before discussing diplomacy. “It seems as if Wonder Woman has an agenda,” says the article, “but it’s in the name of unity, so her words resonate with the audience.”

In the original graphic novel, Wonder Woman’s sexuality is only hinted at as bisexual. Her sexual preferences and those of the Amazons have been touched on before in mainline comics despite her romantic history with Steve Trevor and Superman.

Gal Gadot even expressed openness to Diana being bisexual since it’s established by Patty Jenkins in the first film Amazons don’t need men for sensual pleasure.

This isn’t the first time DC Animation toyed with a character’s orientation for woke points – something that occurs all the time in every form of comic media. Aqualad was recently made gay in Young Justice Outsiders.

Harley Quinn’s fluid sexuality is often hinted at – as in Birds of Prey – and her relationship with Poison Ivy is expected to get physically intimate in season two of the DC Universe cartoon. Ivy is known for liking girls too as anyone who watched Batman: Hush saw.

It’s predicted by One Angry Gamer and others following the story we can expect to see more of this in the future.

Superman: Red Son stars Jason Isaacs (Scoob!, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) as Superman, Amy Acker (Angel, The Gifted) as Lois Lane, Diedrich Bader (Batman: The Brave and the Bold) as Lex Luthor, and Paul Williams (Baby Driver, Batman: The Animated Series) as Brainiac. Vanessa Marshall (Harley Quinn, Star Wars Rebels) plays Wonder Woman.

In a twist, Lois and Lex have a spark Superman and Wonder Woman lack and their encounter ends more favorably for Luthor than Supe’s one with Diana did for him. Here is the clip.

Available now on Digital HD, Superman: Red Son will be released on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on April 17th. Below is the official trailer.
