New Godzilla vs. Kong Synopsis Tells Us Two “Legends Collide”

Godzilla vs. Kong got a reworked synopsis that is shortened and plays up the epic appeal through the use of “legendary” language.

“Legends collide,” says the new synopsis (shared by Cosmic Book News), in a “battle for the ages.” It also reminds us of the role Monarch plays in fighting “a human conspiracy” that threatens to destroy all monsters.

Read it below:

“Legends collide as Godzilla and Kong, the two most powerful forces of nature, clash on the big screen in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into fantastic uncharted terrain, unearthing clues to the Titans’ very origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.”

The term “legends” doesn’t appear in the original synopsis dating to the start of production. It could be a change meant to slyly nod at producer Legendary Pictures who has helped craft the MonsterVerse with Warner Bros. and Godzilla’s creators at Toho.

It works as an apt descriptor for the two goliaths as well. Each has been a global pop culture icon for nearly a century.

Here is the old synopsis:

“In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the
planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy
threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.”

The “human conspiracy” is a central plot point that’s been known for some time. Spoilers from a Hong Kong toy expo point to Mechagodzilla as the mystery behind it, accompanied by an unidentified man-made Titan.

Other spoilers say Kong and Godzilla will have to team up, but they will duke it out in the end and there is a definitive winner. The last time they faced off in a cinematic crossover, that winner was Kong.

In a related update, Coronavirus pushed the James Bond film No Time to Die from its April release to November which could mean trouble for the long-awaited, somewhat beleaguered, titanic smackdown.

That’s not good when the previous MonsterVerse installment, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, was deemed an underperformer last year.

Directed by Adam Wingard (You’re Next!), Godzilla vs. Kong unleashes all-out kaiju world-breaking mayhem on Nov. 20th. Warner Bros. will again handle distribution in the US. Toho has that honor in the Japanese market.
