Rumor: Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow Film Could Be Delayed Due To Coronavirus

A new rumor indicates Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow film could be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The rumor comes from the Black Widow Brasil Twitter account.

Using Google’s translation function the tweet reads:

Scarlett and the team BlackWidow still not sure if the film’s premiere will happen as planned! But they hope to have more concrete information soon. The information came from her own manager via instagram. :)”

Jeremy Conrad at MCU Cosmic explains that he was able to confirm that the conversation with Scarlett Johansson’s manager took place. He also notes, “it looks like there are things going on behind the scenes that are putting that May 1st release in doubt.”

However, he believes Disney might be taking a wait and see approach. He explains, “It’s possible they’re waiting to see how Mulan opens up next weekend before making any final decision, especially with what happened with Onward last weekend and all of the recent delays such as F9 moving to 2021.”

Multiple films have already pushed back their release dates. The upcoming ninth Fast & Furious film recently announced they are delaying their film nearly a year to April 2021.

John Krasinski would also announce that A Quiet Place Part II would also be delayed.

Krasinski states, “One of the things I’m most proud of is that people have said our movie is one you have to see all together. Well due to the ever-changing circumstances of what’s going on in the world around us, now is clearly not the right time to do that. As insanely excited as we are for all of you to see this movie…I’m gonna wait to release the film til we CAN all see it together! So here’s to our group movie date! See you soon!”

Before F9 and A Quiet Place Part II, the upcoming James Bond No Time to Die film was also delayed to November.

While none of these movies actually state why they are delaying their films other than platitudes like “ever-changing circumstances” or a “thorough evaluation of the global theatrical marketplace,” the implication is that it is due to the coronavirus pandemic that has shut down tens of thousands of theaters in China, Italy, and elsewhere across the globe.

If Black Widow is delayed it would be a brand new decision. Marvel Studios and Disney recently released the second trailer for the film earlier this week and also showed off exclusive clips to shareholders at their Annual Shareholders meeting yesterday indicating they were moving ahead with the film’s planned release for May 1, 2020.
