The Exorcist Reboot Reportedly In The Works

A new report details that production studio Morgan Creek is working on a reboot The Exorcist.

The report from Deadline was dropped at the end of their article announcing a new gender-swapped Dead Ringers series from Amazon Studios starring and executive produced by Black Widow’s Rachel Weisz.

Deadline’s Justin Kroll and Nellie Andreeva casually wrote, “Current Morgan Creek projects include Stay Tuned at AMC, with a planned theatrical reboot of The Exorcist in the works for 2021.” No other details were provided for this reboot. It’s unclear who will star in the film as well as who will direct.

The Exorcist was a 1973 film from director William Friedkin based on the novel and screenplay by William Peter Blatty.

The film starred Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Linda Blair, Lee J. Cobb, and Jason Miller.

The movie saw a mother seek the help of two priests after her 12 year-old daughter was possessed.

The 1972 film has an 8.0 rating out of 10 on IMDB from 353,652 votes.

On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an 87% Audience Score from 420,208 user ratings. It also receives a Certified Fresh Score from critics with an 83% on the Tomatometer.

Morgan Creek is no stranger to The Exorcist franchise. While they did not produce the original film they were behind 2005’s Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, 2004’s Exorcist: The Beginning, and 1990’s The Exorcist III.

The production company is also no stranger to remakes involving horror franchises. Morgan Creek remade 1982s The Thing by director John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley and Keith David.

They produced The Thing in 2011 from director Matthijs van Heijningen that starred Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

The last we saw of The Exorcist franchise was on the small screen with The Exorcist TV series that ran from 2016 to 2018. The show followed three priests as they dealt with a number of cases involving a demonic presence.

It starred Alfonso Herrera as Father Tomas Ortega, Ben Daniels as Father Marcus Keane, and Kurt Egyiawan as Father Bennett.

Are you interested in seeing a reboot The Exorcist? Or do you think there is no need to reboot the horror classic?
