Zack Snyder Opens Up About a Possible Sequel to His Cut of Justice League

Will The Snyder Cut lead to a second Justice League film if successful? Zack Snyder tells us the odds in a new podcast interview.

He appeared on The Reel in Motion Roundtable to talk about his expectations regarding what could come out of the release on HBO Max as well as his frame of mind finishing his project all these years later.

Snyder explained that, while planned follow-ups were canceled, Justice League was designed with sequels in mind.

“When I made the movie, the design of the movie, I always thought we would do this movie and I’d be setting up a bunch of stuff for what would come after it,” he said.

Justice League was going to be a trilogy, as we already know, and lead to a whole host of spinoffs from a Cyborg solo film to Ben Affleck’s take on The Batman.

Those plans at WarnerMedia shifted following the lackluster box office returns for Justice League. Their subsequent films like Shazam! and Aquaman, while still connected to the Justice League continuity were more stand alone adventures.

And that appeared to be the plan moving forward until AT&T and HBO Max announced that after a lengthy campaign from fans that Snyder would return and unleash his Director’s Cut of Justice League on the streaming service.

The approach of standalone films might further change. An offer for more DC movies could be left on the table.

Snyder, however, says he isn’t expecting Warner Bros. to give him one. “It is what it is… I’m not expecting… I don’t know what’s going to happen, but my expectations are not ‘Oh, Warner Bros. is going to ask me to make another movie’,” he added.

Like I’ve said, they may do just that. His Cut’s success could mean an opportunity to direct a Justice League sequel, featuring the Legion of Doom, and Man of Steel 2 if he wants it. This, although yet to be verified, is according to inside sources of Mikey Sutton.

Fans and supporters are beginning to show as much as enthusiasm to the scoop as they did for the trailer unleashed at DC FanDome.

Lex Luthor

All well and good, but Justice League has a small Lex Luthor problem to address, outside the polarizing Jesse Eisenberg. His fate is like a “Choose Your Adventure.”

He ended the Whedon cut of Justice League forming an Injustice League with Deathstroke but their meeting goes differently in The Snyder Cut. Slade, based on plot leaks, refuses to help Lex or break him out of prison.

Zack Snyder teased a different arc for Lex on the Roundtable but didn’t want to give anything away. “There is a whole Lex Luthor concept I had that would unfold over a longer narrative trajectory,” he commented. “I don’t know, we’ll see.”

Four hours, the runtime for Snyder’s Justice League, might serve as long enough of a narrative trajectory.

Justice League: The Snyder Cut premieres in 2021 on HBO Max as a four-part miniseries. Each episode is reportedly broken down into one hour apiece.
