Redesigns of superhero costumes will never go out of style so it ought to be no surprise Javicia Leslie, the new star of Batwoman, is receiving a new suit when she steps into Ruby Rose’s boots.

Leslie took part in a panel at DC FanDome: Explore the Multiverse that also included showrunner Caroline Dries, executive producer Sarah Schechter, and cast members Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, and Nicole Kang.

The topic turned to the new Batwoman suit and how important representation is to it and the hard upbringing/background of a drug dealer belonging to Leslie’s character, Ryan Wilder.

“How can we be sure that Ryan isn’t hiding what makes her awesome, with this suit?” said Dries.

She then seemed to tease the suit doesn’t go through one lone instantaneous change but rather gradual adaptations to Wilder’s character growth.

“So it’s going to be a bit of an evolution,” she said. “We’ll see the suit evolve early on in the season.” The more comfortable Ryan gets with being a superhero, the more changes occur.

Wilder, Dries says, will look at the Batsuit as an adaptable source of empowerment, mirroring Kate Kane’s speech the suit will only be perfect “when it fits a woman.”

“Ryan is like, ‘For me to feel empowered in this thing, it needs to feel like it’s representing something I’m fighting for’,” Dries explained.

It’s also reported the suit changes will accommodate Javicia Leslie’s natural hair, as in no wigs. More importantly, her character’s going to fight the power, as it were, holding her down.

“Ryan is a new character in the world of DC and she has a lot going against her,” says Dries. “She’s a girl who was a statistic of injustice the moment she was born.”

She continued, “The system was not made for this person and she will constantly battle the system,” adding “She’s battled with it her whole life and she will battle with it as Batwoman.”

Caroline Dries created Ryan Wilder from scratch as a stand-in for Kate Kane. Wilder is replacing Kane but Batman’s cousin is not being killed off. Her disappearance will actually be one of the mysteries threading through the second season.

Ruby Rose left the lead role of Batwoman for reasons undisclosed, at first. “Those who know, know,” she cryptically put it on Instagram.

Batwoman returns in 2021.
