Rumor: An Icon Movie Will Follow Static Shock, Michael B. Jordan Could Star

The announcement Michael B. Jordan is going to produce a Static Shock movie at Warner Bros. opened the door to a whole universe of characters. It begged the question, more so, of what other Milestone characters might follow.
A fresh Mikey Sutton scoop just may give us the answer. Sutton heard from his sources Milestone’s equivalent of Superman, Icon, “is what WB is planning to roll out after” Static.
“Icon is essentially a black Superman, a powerful alien who has assumed the identity of an African-American man,” Sutton explained. He is another character famously written/created by Dwayne McDuffie and co-created by Milestone co-founder Denys Cowan.
The name Icon assumes on Earth is Augustus Freeman and his parallel powers to The Last Son of Krypton include super-strength, invulnerability, and flight.
Icon’s associations include his female sidekick and student Rocket who has been by his side since his first issue in 1993. She probably won’t be far behind, adding another character to Jordan and WB’s push for diversity.
“Both Warner Bros. and their parent company AT&T are excited by its creative and commercial potential,” Sutton added.

Jordan made his motivation in producing Static clear, “building a new universe centered around black superheroes.” That and “bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms.”
So, far from one and done, Static Shock is only the first in a line of comic-based motion pictures. It’ll be a universe unto itself, potentially existing in a corner of the DC Multiverse, but not within the mainline.
Mikey Sutton sees an interesting possibility given that premise. He reported earlier that Michael B. Jordan is a favorite to play John Stewart in Warner’s rebooted DC Extended Universe. Now Jordan could be “in striking distance to portraying Icon.”
Sutton believes Jordan could play both, fulfilling his desire to play a black Superman. He had a pitch and met with Warner about it but is too busy to commit, and unwilling to wait for the next movie to be greenlit.
As Icon, he can have his cake and eat it too without retconning or revamping a lot of material, limited strictly by his schedule and the interest, notes Sutton.
Milestone Comics is also being relaunched in print. Icon and Rocket are headlining the brand in a new series by Reginald Hudlin and Denys Cowan.
