Ostrander Suicide Squad

The plot of The Suicide Squad is now official. Task Force X is headed to DC’s famed South American country in turmoil, Corto Maltese, to investigate Nazi science experiments.

Empire shared the goods in their James Gunn interview piece that went behind the scenes of the film. They also talked to executive producer Peter Safran who revealed the movie’s fictional Latin American locale.

Safran then came forward with further details of a Nazi prison and mad-scientist laboratory called Jotunheim which is rooted in the comics, specifically Suicide Squad’s initial run that began in 1987.

“There they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim, where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place,” said Safran.

A sample scene with these very same plot details leaked to the Internet in the simpler times of 2019 when production on The Suicide Squad was just getting going.

The sample revealed early on the Squad was tasked with infiltrating a castle-like prison where Nazis conducted their experiments and held a “Beast” prisoner.

We knew the Beast was an alien and learned a few short months ago it is, in fact, the Justice League’s first-ever foe, Starro the Conqueror. Held up in a terrace of the prison, he reportedly grows and talks through the people his offspring controls.

Jotunheim will ring a few bells as the home of the Frost Giants in Marvel continuities, but we’re not talking about the Nine Realms. The Nordic toponym belongs to a fortress built by the Germans first seen in Suicide Squad #1 (1987).

It was used as a stronghold where prisoners were kept and experiments were done on them, although the place existed in a Middle Eastern country – the equally made-up Qurac – not South America.

Task Force X was assigned by Amanda Waller to assault and take out Jotunheim and the occupying force, a terrorist group known as The Jihad – guaranteed not to be appearing in any DC movies or shows anytime soon in the name of political correctness.

The Jihad was not holding Starro captive nor attempting to use him as a weapon when the Suicide Squad went after them, in case you were wondering.

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is meant to come out in August of next year. The film is advertised as a wildly different, riskier take than David Ayer’s, and any character is fair game to wind up dead.
