While the ongoing pandemic continues to delay the premiere of the highly anticipated cinematic kaiju smackdown ‘Godzilla vs Kong’, which was originally set to have already premiered by now alongside Wonder Woman 1984 and No Time To Die, a new piece of official toy concept art takes the idea of a King Kong and Godzilla crossover to the next level.

The concept, which was revealed by UK animal figurine designer REBOR through a piece of production artwork for their upcoming “One Kaiju” figure, imagines a Godzilla/Kong hybrid, replete with scales, opposable thumbs, and a giant tail.

You may not be inclined to look away, but you won’t be able to unsee it either.

Additional digital molds of Kong-Zilla, including a profile, a full frontal-body shot, and a close-up of the monster’s head, were shared by REBOR on their Facebook page.

As you can see, the design is constituted mostly of Kong’s proportions and body parts, but features Godzilla’s scales, dermal plates and, most notably, tail.

However, it appears REBOR is making this figure based solely on how visually striking and intriguing of an idea the literal monster-mash would be, as there has currently been no indication that a Kong-meets-Godzilla fusion will grace the silver screen adventures of the MosnterVerse.

That’s not to say it’s an impossibility, as a newspaper article seen in the credits of King of the Monsters hasestablished in canon that that Monarch is tinkering with monster DNA to create human-made Titans.

While it’s unlikely that this hybrid is as likely a contender to make an appearance as classic, established Toho kaiju, it also wouldn’t be the weirdest thing ever tried with either cinematic legend.

In the 90s, Toho played with the idea of reviving Mechani-Kong, a two-time defensive mechanical answer to Kong himself, as a mecha whose purpose was to inject humans into Godzilla in order to battle him from within.

Unfortunately, fears over licensing issues and legal battles scrapped the idea completely, but the idea would later be referenced in the design of Bulgario, a mecha who appeared in The Justirisers tv series.

In the 1970s, a script for a Godzilla film intended to help the franchise recover from the poor box office performance of Terror of Mechagodzilla, titled ‘A Space Godzilla’ saw a female Godzilla, who had died of diabetes, wash up on the shore of Japan.

After discovering that Godzilla was actually an alien from a ‘Godzilla Planet’, the monster’s body was converted into a spaceship and used to send her and her unborn child back to their planet (seriously).

Though it was quickly (and understandably) scrapped, with 1984’s The Return of Godzilla being produced in its place, A Space Godzilla was later published as an illustrated short story in two parts, with Toho’s permission, across two 1979 issues of Starlog Magazine.

It’s important to note that, despite their similar naming, this story has nothing to do with the cult-fave enemy SpaceGodzilla.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures still seem determined to have Godzilla vs. Kong release in theaters, with its premiere currently slated for May 21st, 2021.

However, it’s also possible the film could follow in the path of Wonder Woman 1984 and wind up on streaming if the right deal is struck.
