We finally know what Jared Leto will look like when he reprises The Joker in the Knightmare portion of Zack Snyder’s Justice League thanks to a string of striking images.

Snyder released the black-and-white images as part of an interview with Vanity Fair. They show Joker sitting in a small room in Arkham, presumably, wearing a smock and some rubber gloves. His hair is longer and his makeup is noticeably smeared.

Here’s a close up of Joker’s face.

Speaking with Vanity Fair about the Joker, Snyder stated, “The Joker is really the only thing that I thought of in retrospect. But I will say that it was always my intention to bring Joker into that world.”

Snyder previously shared an image of Batman standing in a hallway or within Joker’s cell taken from behind to his Vero account.

Here’s a better look.

The images of Knightmare Batfleck and Joker were also composited into a cinematic clip by Avidity Design which is a find we give a tip of the hat to Heroic Hollywood for. You can see that below.

This dystopia-rattled Mr. J was teased late last November by scooper Daniel Richtman in a tweet elaborated on by Geeks WorldWide’s Moonlight Warrior. The latter said the new, improved Joker was “Rugged” with “Long Hair” and “No Tats or Capped Teeth.”

No visuals corroborated the scoop until the first blurry image of Leto holding up a playing card was recently released.

Snyder revealed to Vanity Fair the card is the same one moviegoers may remember from Batman v Superman’s premonition set in the Knightmare timeline, and Joker’s scene fills in some gaps. “The scene explains why Bruce had the Joker card taped to his gun that you see in Batman v Superman,” he said.

Continuing, the director doubly confirmed the theory Joker killed Robin. “I’d always wanted to explore the death of Robin,” he added. “And if there ever was going to be a next movie, which, of course, there probably won’t be, I wanted to do a thing where in flashbacks we learn how Robin died, how Joker killed him and burned down Wayne Manor, and that whole thing that happened between he and Bruce.”

We may not get all those answers in The Snyder Cut but he explained how Joker fits into the story, what will happen when he finally meets the Dark Knight face to face, and why the filmmaker dreamed up this bleak reunion of blood enemies.

“The cool thing about the scene is that it’s Joker talking directly to Batman about Batman,” Snyder said. “It’s Joker analyzing Batman about who he is and what he is.”

He continued, “That’s the thing I also felt like fans deserved from the DC Universe. That is to say, the Jared Leto Joker and the Ben Affleck Batman, they never really got together. It seemed uncool to me that we would make it all the way through this incarnation of Batman and Joker without seeing them come together.”

Could this be the only time we see the two foes together in the Snyderverse, whether it’s because there is no sequel or Batman kills Joker and takes the card as a trophy? Nobody knows – although fingers are crossed at that sequel potential.

In his interview with VF, Snyder lastly verified the tattoos initially seen on Leto’s Joker have disappeared. “I would say that there’s been some water under the bridge,” he responded when asked.

As for how they were removed or if they are just covered up with face paint, he’s not telling. “Who knows what’s happened,” said Snyder. “I don’t know if he’s wearing makeup, I don’t know what’s happening. It’s hard to say exactly.”
