DC Comics To Celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month With DC PRIDE Anthology And Variant Covers

DC has announced that they will be launching an initiative this June to celebrate and promote LGBTQ+ Pride, which will consist of variant covers, new releases, and an 80-page anthology tome.

Detailed in a recent blog post on the publisher’s website, the “DC Pride” anthology series will include profiles and appearances by some of DC’s most well-known LGBTQ+ characters and the actors who play them in other media.

Featured heroes will include Batwoman, Renee Montoya, Constantine, Apollo, Extraño, Midnighter, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and more.

DC Pride #1 will also feature the first comic appearance of transwoman hero Nia Nal/Dreamer, who made her debut on The CW’s Supergirl, in a story penned by the character’s TV actor, Nicole Maines.

Creative teams for the other stories were also revealed, and are as follows:

  • Poison Ivy & Harley Quinn by Mariko Tamaki & Amy Reeder
  • Midnighter by Steve Orlando & Stephen Byrne
  • Flash of Earth-11 (Jess Chambers) by Danny Lore & Lisa Sterle
  • Green Lantern (Alan Scott) & Obsidian by Sam Johns & Klaus Janson
  • Aqualad (Jackson Hyde) by Andrew Wheeler & Luciano Vecchio
  • Dreamer by Nicole Maines & Rachael Stott
  • Renee Montoya by Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridge
  • Pied Piper by Sina Grace, Ro Stein & Ted Brandt

DC also provided a list of nine titles which are set to receive “Pride” themed variant covers illustrated by LGBTQ+ artists:

  • DC Pride #1 Pride variant cover by Jen Bartel
  • Harley Quinn #4 Pride variant cover by Kris Anka

  • Superman #32 Pride variant cover by David Talaski
  • Teen Titans Academy #4 Pride variant cover by Stephen Byrne
  • Wonder Girl #2 Pride variant cover by Kevin Wada
  • Wonder Woman #773 Pride variant cover by Paulina Ganucheau

Pride tie-ins won’t be limited to June, as DC will also publish various titles headlining LGBTQ+ characters throughout the year, including the GLAAD-nominated Suicide Squad: Bad Blood by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo, Poison Ivy: Thorns by Kody Keplinger and Sara Kipin, and I Am Not Starfire by Mariko Tamaki.

Tamaki will also work with arist Amancay Nahuelpan (Justice League Dark) to produce the upcoming miniseries, Crush & Lobo

Spinning out of Teen Titans Academy, Crush & Lobo follows the father-daughter duo after she “in full-on self-destruct mode!” rage-quits the Teen Titans, blows up her relationship with her girlfriend Katie, and “decides it’s time to finally confront her father in space jail and get her baggage sorted before she wrecks everything. Like father, like daughter?”

Crush & Lobo has a main cover by Kris Anka and multiple variant covers. One is in 1:25 aspect ratio by Christian Ward; another is a Pride variant by Yoshi Yoshitani.

The first Pride-promoted release will be Suicide Squad: Bad Blood on April 27th, followed by Crush & Lobo and Poison Ivy: Thorns on June 1st and I Am Not Starfire on July 27th.
