Ghost of Tsushima was initially revealed during the Paris Games Week in 2017, and it became one of the most highly anticipated video games almost immediately, eventually releasing in July of 2020 as a PlayStation-exclusive.

Upon release, critics gave Ghost of Tsushima rave reviews. Interestingly enough, that actually ended up triggering some snowflakes who couldn’t fathom to see a Western-developed title getting high praise from Japanese critics.

Kotaku was the first to report on the topic above, and this triggered The Washington Post’s Gene Park, amongst others, who claimed the article about Ghost of Tsushima being praised by Japanese critics “will be used in bad faith to defend the game against criticism,” even arguing that “Asians will have different perspectives than Asian Americans.”

Conversely, Toshihiro Nagoshi, who is well-known as the creator of the asimilarycritically acclaimed, and best-selling Yakuza series, was among the many Japanese developers who praised Sucker Punch for their work on Ghost of Tsushima.

Nagoshi said that the game should’ve been made by Japanese people, but he also agreed that they lost to Sucker Punch, and the “monstrous job” they did collecting data about Japanese culture. He added that Ghost of Tsushima is “the kind of work made by non-Japanese people that makes you feel they’re even more Japanese than us.”

Ghost of Tsushima was also one of the nominees for last year’s Game of the Year at The Game Awards, though it eventually lost out to The Last of Us Part II, despite how most people seemingly favoured Sucker Punch’s action-adventure title above Naughty Dog’s extremely divisive sequel.

With Chad Stahelski in the director’s chair, fans may well end up with a top quality movie that does justice to Sucker Punch’s critically acclaimed title.

The live-action adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima does not yet have an estimated release date.
