Mark Millar Seemingly Indicates That Jupiter’s Legacy Is Cancelled At Netflix

Jupiter’s Legacy creator Mark Millar seemingly indicated that the recent Netflix release has been canceled.
Jupiter’s Legacy began streaming on Netflix less than a month ago on May 7th and the first season ended in a cliffhanger.

It doesn’t look like the show will tie up that cliffhanger as Millar reported the actors have been released from their contracts.
He updated fans on Twitter, “Some big news from us on what’s coming up next in live-action from Millarworld, peeps!”
“I’m really proud of what the team achieved with Jupiter’s Legacy and the amazing work everyone did on that origin season. I’ve been asked a lot about what we’re planning next with this world and the answer is to see what the super-villains are getting up to,” Millar said.

He continued, “I’ve always loved crime stories from Scorsese to Tarantino and super-villains are always the most fun part of any superhero story. To do something exclusively focused on the villains they fight just feels incredibly fresh as we explore what it’s like to be a bad guy in a world crawling with good guys who want to put you in jail.”
“Jupiter’s Legacy is a vast and rich space with lots of characters to mine and so I’m happy to share that our next step here is a live-action version of the Supercrooks comic I created with Leinil Francis Yu a few years back,” Millar elaborated.

Millar then revealed Jupiter’s Legacy was getting he axe, “Given where we’re going next, we’ve made the tough call of letting our incredible cast out of their show commitment as we continue to thoughtfully develop all realms of the Jupiter’s Legacy saga.”
“We’re confident we’ll return to it later and just want to say thanks to you guys for your continued support and to the cast and crew who made this look so great,” he concluded.

Millar then posted a follow-up tweet clarifying that Supercrooks will debut as an anime series from Studio Bones later this year.
He stated, “Note: Supercrooks will appear first as an Anime series from Studio Bones later this year. Leinil Francis Yu & I have created a lot of new stuff for this show and it’s looking fantastic. It’ll be previewed at the Annecy animation festival in France later this month!”

It’s unclear why Netflix decided to scrap more seasons of Jupiter’s Legacy.
Borys Kit at The Hollywood Reporter speculates that it had extremely poor viewership.
He wrote, “How bad were the metrics? JUPITER’S LEGACY debuted May 7 on Netflix and today, with no one using the word ‘cancelled,’ the show is done. The cast is being released from contracts.”

He also claimed that the show cost $200 million to produce. He stated, “Also, per sources, Jupiter’s Legacy cost around $200 MILLION, reshoots and everything included, so this is a sizeable loss.”

As for Super Crooks, it was originally a four issue comic book series titled Supercrooks: The Heist.
Here’s the official synopsis from Amazon, “When the market is flooded with competition and the authorities are on your tail, what’s an all-American super villain to do? Go to Spain, of course! Johnny Bolt convinces his villainous pals to pull off one last heist but will culture shock get to them before the policia do? And when Johnny’s target is revealed as the greatest super villain of all time, things go horribly wrong…”
The original series was not attached to Jupiter’s Legacy.

Millar did provide more details on the show in an update about all the Millarworld projects back in the beginning of May. At the time he revealed the show would be 13 30 minute episodes.
