A recently released promo video for Marvel Studios and Disney+’s Loki show reveals the character is gender fluid.

The promo was shared to the official Loki Twitter account on June 6th.

Watch.

At the beginning of the video, a rap sheet for Loki is shown. It shows his name, his alias and his place of birth.

As you continue down the rap sheet, a box labeled “Sex” is filled out with the word “Fluid.”

It’s unclear how this will be portrayed in the show.

A rumor from November 2019 indicated that actress Sophia Di Martino could play a female version of Loki.

That rumor came from Deadline who reported, “One source close to the production hints that Di Martino may in fact portray a female incarnation of Loki and, in effect share the role with Hiddleston.”

The rumor appeared to be confirmed as a set photo of Di Martino in what looks like a Loki outfit spread across social media.

This is a shift from how the character was previously portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the first Thor film, Anthony Hopkins refers to Loki as “my son.”

Even before that Odin reveals that Loki is Laufey’s son. The rap sheet also lists his last name as Laufeyson.

A female version of Loki appeared in Thor #9 by J. Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel. Originally, it was believed to be a reincarnated version of Loki.

However, by Thor #12, it was revealed that Loki had taken possession of Sif’s body as part of a plot to take down his brother, Thor.

More recently in Loki: Agent of Asgard #5 in 2014, it was revealed that Loki could change his shape even into a female version as long as it’s him.

Of note, during J. Michael Straczynski’s run on Thor when Loki was possessing Sif, he asks a boon of Hela to use her magic to suspend Sif’s body in animation while returning him to the form he was born as.

Hela specifically states, “Join your power with mine, Loki. Let go of the present flesh and remember your face as it was when you were born…when you aged…and when you last saw it.”

After Hela performs this magic, Loki returns to his male form and states, “My own hands…my own heart…my own flesh…my own blood! This is Loki born anew! This is Loki truly beautiful!”
