Searcy took to Twitter to respond to a petition being pushed by a number of Hollywood celebrities including Olivia Wilde.

Wilde shared a Change.org petition created by Bandar Albuliwi calling for a ban “of real firearms on set.”

The petition states, “Real guns are no longer needed on film production sets. This isn’t the early 90’s, when Brandon Lee was killed in the same manner.  Change needs to happen before additional talented lives are lost.”

It adds, “Please sign this petition and demand for Alec Baldwin to use his power and influence in the Hollywood film industry to make change and ban real guns on film sets.” The petition has been signed by 62,916 people as of writing.

Searcy would respond to Wilde sharing the petition writing, “Typical Democrat solution: penalize the hundreds of armorers who have worked safely in Hollywood for decades because some cheap asshole flaunted safety rules & got someone killed.”

He added, “This is just more Hollywood star bullshit of blaming the inanimate object. Ignore these a**holes.”

Searcy would also respond directly to Wilde’s tweet.

He wrote, “It isn’t the gun’s fault. Stop trying to end an entire division of jobs in Hollywood because a s***ty, irresponsible friend of yours hurt someone.”

Disney-owned ABC and their police drama The Rookie starring Nathan Fillion banned “‘live’ weapons on the show.”

A memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter from showrunner Alexi Hawley states, The tragic events in New Mexico yesterday have shaken us all, and our hearts go out to the friends and family of Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza.”

It continues, “As of today, it is now policy on The Rookie that all gunfire on set will be Air Soft guns with CG muzzle flashes added in post. There will be no more “live” weapons on the show. The safety our cast and crew is too important. Any risk is too much risk.”

The memo concluded, “As always, if you ever feel unsafe or witness anything that concerns you, please don’t hesitate to report it. My door is always open.”

Amazon’s The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke also pledged to ban guns with blanks from his sets.

He tweeted, “Someone hurt or killed on my set is my worst nightmare. Sending love to Halyna Hutchins’ family, Jensen Ackles, cast & crew of ‘Rust.’ I’m so sorry.”

Kripke added, “In her memory, a simple, easy pledge: no more guns with blanks on any of my sets ever. We’ll use VFX muzzle flashes. Who’s with me?”

Australian director and composer Jamie Blanks took up Kripke’s pledge writing, “I was very adamant on my last two movies that all firearms be incapable of loading any ammunition, including blanks. It’s easy to do muzzle flashes convincingly with VFX.

“Any gun used on any set should be incapable of firing and harming someone. Glad Kripke has given this pledge,” he said.

Jonathan Tropper, an executive producer on Apple’s See starring Jason Momoa and the showrunner and Banshee and Warrior also took up Kripke’s pledge.

He tweeted, “I’m with you. We’ve been doing air “kicks” and VFX muzzle flashes for years. And the tech has only gotten better. No reason this shouldn’t be the industry-mandated norm.”
