Co-directed by Cowboy Bebop director Shinichirō Watanabe and featuring music from Cowboy Bebop composer Yoko Kanno, Macross Plus Movie Edition is a theatrical re-cut of the four-episode Macross Plus OVA – plus a few pieces of new footage – made in an attempt to bring the series more in line with series script writer Keiko Nobumoto’s original vision of the story as a feature-length film.

Originally released in Japan in 1995, an English home release of a hard-sub encoded version of Macross Plus Movie Edition was briefly produced in both VHS and DVD formats around the turn of the millennium, while a subsequent 2016 Blu-ray remaster could not be sold in the United States due to the aforementioned legal situation between Harmony Gold and Big West.

Now, the film is set to finally make its proper U.S. theatrical debut, landing in theaters for a one-night only premiere event on December 14th courtesy of Fathom Events.

A synopsis for the film, as provided by Big West, begins, “In the year 2040, on the distant planet Eden, former childhood friends Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman find themselves pitted against each other as test pilots of rival teams in a competition to decide the next generation of variable mecha fighters.

“The two must also deal with their own unresolved history with mutual love interest, Myung Fang Lone, who has returned as the manager of Sharon Apple, the AI pop star (virturoid) and the galaxy’s biggest singing sensation,” it continues.

The synopsis concludes, “When Sharon’s advanced artificial intelligence gains consciousness, Isamu, Myung, and Guld must face their turbulent past and come together as Sharon Apple becomes self-aware and takes control of the Macross battlefortress itself!
