Despite previous claims that the decision to place the project on the backburner was based on scheduling conflicts, a new rumor suggests that the recent indefinite delay of Patty Jenkins’ planned Star Wars: Rogue Squadron film was actually due to “creative differences” between the director and Lucasfilm executives.

According to former The Hollywood Reporter editor Matthew Belloni, reporting on information allegedly relayed to him by “a few insiders” for his personal blog, Puck, Rogue Squadron’s rescheduling was not caused by “scheduling problems [or] prior commitments”, but rather “the real culprit was the dreaded ‘creative differences’”.

“Specifically,” explained Belloni. “Jenkins couldn’t agree on the script with Lucasfilm executives, including senior V.P. Michelle Rejwan.”

Belloni further noted that his insiders informed him that such a disagreement was “not unusual, of course, but it’s a laughably recurring problem at Lucasfilm under president Kathleen Kennedy,” as “top filmmakers are dying to make a Star Wars movie—until they sign on and experience the micromanagement and plot-point-by-committee process.”

“It happened to the Game of Thrones guys, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who were hired to create a new trilogy but bailed. It also happened to Rian Johnson, writer and director of 2017’s The Last Jedi, whose own planned trilogy was shelved,” he added. “Jenkins wasn’t willing to dick around, and she has other projects, notably Wonder Woman 3 at Warner Bros., where she enjoys more creative freedom.”

Rogue Squadron’s delay was first revealed on November 8th when The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit reported that his sources had informed him that “the producers and filmmaking team came to the realization that Jenkins’ schedule and other commitments wouldn’t allow for the window needed to make the movie in 2022.”

“Thus, Squadron has been taken off the production schedule,” wrote Kit. “The hope is that once Jenkins fulfills her previous commitments, she will be able to return to the project.”

As of writing, neither Disney, Lucasfilm, nor Jenkins have publicly commented on this rumor.
