The Batman’s already stacked roster of rogues, which has been confirmed to include Penguin, Catwoman, and Riddler, may have one more villain to brag about, as new speculation suggests that a hint towards the presence of a real “killer” is hidden in a new synopsis for the film.

Recently released by Warner Bros., the new synopsis opens with the setup of Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) who, despite being only in his second year as a costumed crimefighter, has established a reputation as the genuine and lone “embodiment of vengeance” – though not without two key allies in with only Alfred (Andy Serkis) and Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) – on the streets of Gotham

“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City,” the synopsis begins. “With only a few trusted allies—Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright)—amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.”

The synopsis’ second half then refers to “a killer” targeting “Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations.”

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano),” it concludes. “As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

While from an initial and cursory glance this vague hints towards a killer seems to be referring to The Riddler, not everyone is convinced.

CBR thinks the line actually hints at an appearance by The Joker, based on the rumor that Eternals star Barry Keoghan has been cast in The Batman as the next cinematic incarnation of the legendary villain.

Although there are rumors of a scene in Arkham where Joker is present, Warner Bros. has not acknowledged whether or not the Jester of Genocide is in the film, or if Keoghan was actually cast.

The only proof of the latter comes from a social media post made by Keoghan’s brother in which he called the rumor “Unreal Stuff.”

In a case of a smoking gun, the post was deleted, though admittedly, that could mean a handful of things aside from WB keeping the lid on a surprise.
