In the linked statement, Abdullah began by touting community despite choosing Smollett’s side over the Osundairo brothers, who according to the LA Times both testified in court that Smollett hired them to carry out a racist and antigay attack on him.

She wrote, “As abolitionists, we approach situations of injustice with love and align ourselves with our community. Because we got us. So let’s be clear: we love everybody in our community.”

Abdullah then went on to describe the trial as a “white supremacist charade,” writing, “It’s not about a trial or a verdict decided in a white supremacist charade, it’s about how we treat our community when corrupt systems are working to devalue their lives.”

Later in the statement, Abdullah asserted, “In our commitment to abolition, we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom.”

She goes on to claim, “While policing at-large is an irredeemable institution, CPD is notorious for its long and deep history of corruption, racism, and brutality.”

“Black Lives Matter will continue to work towards the abolition of police and every unjust system,” she declared.

Abdullah concluded, “We will continue to love and protect one another, and wrap our arms around those who do the work to usher in Black freedom and, by extension, freedom for everyone else.”

According to a police report, Smollett claims he was attacked by two individuals who shouted at him and proceeded to him him in the face and then poured an “unknown substance” on him. The alleged attacked then reportedly wrapped a rope around his neck.

Media reports would indicate that the attackers shouted “MAGA country,” but ABC 7 Chicago reporter Rob Elgas reported that Chicago Police PIO informed him, “I’m not saying it’s not true. He could have remembered later, but he did not tell officers that in the initial report.”

Elgas added, “Chicago PD says detectives did a follow-up, supplemental interview with Jussie Smollett, where he did in fact tell police his attackers yelled ‘MAGA country.'”

In February 2019, the investigation led to Smollett being indicted by a grand jury on six counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly lying to police about being the victim of the attack.

Cook County special prosecutor Dan Webb announced that “a Cook County grand jury returned a six-count indictment charging Jussie Smollett with making four separate false reports to Chicago  Police Department officers related to his false claims that he was the victim of a hate crime, knowing that he was not the victim of a crime.”

Smollett denied the accusations on the witness stand claiming the attack was “no hoax.”
