Geekosity Suspects Zod And Faora Appearing In The Flash Could Mean Henry Cavill Reprises Superman In the Film

Michael Shannon as General Zod in Man of Steel (2013), Warner Bros.

This news may have slipped by you but a rumor that started with actress Antje Traue has been confirmed with the bonus that both she and Michael Shannon will be back, possibly as General Zod and Faora, in the DCEU as part of The Flash.

The story was seemingly corroborated by a report of a cast list that has both of their names on it. The list comes from a UK Warner Bros. press site and includes Shannon, Traue, Ezra Miller, Ron Livingston, Michael Keaton, Kiersey Clemons, and the new Supergirl Sasha Calle.

Various outlets are reaching out to Warner for clarification but one is running with this update as a good sign for Snyderverse supporters. Although we don’t know if they’re really playing Zod and Faora or if they have more than a cameo in a flashback, for instance, Geekosity’s Mikey Sutton posits Henry Cavill won’t be far behind.

In regard to the idea The Flash would feature Man of Steel’s main foes but not the Man of Steel himself, Sutton rips a quote from Joe Biden and says, “Come on, man,” with bold emphasis. And Sutton bases his conclusion on two factors.

One is his skepticism that the Andy Muschietti-helmed film will nerf Cavill’s Superman or delete him from the Multiverse’s existence via a Flashpoint, which the writer reminds us isn’t a traditional Flashpoint event – “It’s been tweaked,” structurally.

He doesn’t believe, “Warner Bros. will anger millions of Zack Snyder fans for a retcon that’ll confuse the general public” – that being the erasure of Cavill, the DCEU’s main Superman, coupled with the advent of Sasha Calle/Supergirl being his replacement.

Sutton isn’t convinced they’d snuff out “The Big Bang of DC Comics,” or in other words, “The nucleus of any DC universe, cinematic or otherwise,” to supersede him with his cousin (or daughter depending on her backstory) when they canceled the character’s CW series for its poor ratings.

The other factor driving and buoying Sutton here is his optimism about the future of the Snyderverse. To him, Shannon and Traue appearing in The Flash are a sign it will continue and not be erased.

Walking back a claim to the contrary, Sutton now says “the massive success of The Snyder Cut changed everything.” He means, one, the “real numbers” that prove Zack Snyder’s Justice League was a hit for HBO Max and performed very well in Blu-ray sales, and two, his assumption Ben Affleck’s Batman won’t die in The Flash.

Batfleck’s fate, good or bad, in the film isn’t known for sure and it should be noted Affleck appears done with franchise IPs for the time being. Nevertheless, Sutton is encouraged. “Thus, the possibility of Henry Cavill in The Flash increases,” he said. “It provides more evidence that the Snyderverse is coming back.”

Maybe or maybe not, but Sutton isn’t the only one ready for this and Superman to return. Cavill is still open to playing the Kryptonian again, as he told UK program Lorraine earlier this month.

“I do still have the outfit,” he said. “Just in case, yes I do, yes I do. Ready and waiting for the phone call.”

The actor added Man of Steel and the DCEU are a high point of his career he could retire on. “Yeah, it was so much fun,” Cavill continued. “It was the kind of thing where even after, it’s been so long since I put the suit on, professionally, you look back and you think, ‘What a wonderful opportunity.’”

He elaborated, “Even if I were to stop acting tomorrow, and go live on a yacht or a sailing boat somewhere just traveling the med, I can still look back and say I’ve worn a cape and leaped about the place and entertained some people.”

He, Sutton, and the rest of the hopeful folks might see their dream come true when The Flash is finally ready to hit theaters on November 4th, 2022.
