The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg has taken issue with Bill Maher’s recent comments about the pandemic, describing the political commentator and talk show host as “flippant” over his questioning of mask mandates and the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines.

Last Friday, during his opening monologue on Real Time with Bill Maher, the eponymous host offered commentary on the pandemic, asserting, “We didn’t have Omicron when we were here a couple of months ago. That’s the new one, and that one’s very…milder, much milder. We should be celebrating this, but of course it’s very easy catch. It’s like the Candyman; you have to say its name five times and you can get this s—t. ”

“So anyway, hopefully we’re getting out of this s—t soon. I mean, I can’t take much more” Maher added. “It’s just gone on too long. Nobody cares anymore. I don’t want to live in your paranoid world anymore, your masked, paranoid world.”

He continued, “It’s silly now. You have your mask, you have to have a card, you have to have a booster. They scan your head like you’re a cashier and I’m a bunch of bananas. I’m not bananas, you are!”

On Monday’s episode of ABC’s The View, a furious Goldberg responded to Maher, declaring that his comments were “not really funny to people who have lost their kids to this [virus]. Or people who lost family members or dear friends to this.”

She further chastised Maher, “Listen, nobody on the planet really wants to go through this. This is not something we’re doing because it’s, you know, sexually gratifying. This is what we’re doing to protect our families, and you don’t have to do it, but stay away from everybody, because if you are the one who’s not paying attention, and you’re coughing and sneezing, then stay out of the public, man.”

“Nobody wants this,” Goldberg noted. “I don’t want it, and I think he’s forgetting that people are still at risk who cannot get vaccinated, people who can’t get [vaccinated]. Little kids under the age of five, or people with health conditions.”

“How dare you be so flippant, man?” a frustrated Goldberg asked in conclusion to her thoughts.

In addition to his on-air comments, Maher managed to raise some eyebrows earlier in the days when, in an interview with Deadline published just hours before the airing of his Friday show, he questioned the efficacy of the vaccines against the coronavirus.

“I mean, we’re in a very different place with COVID than we were just when I was on the air last time, and that is the vaccines, we know, do not prevent you from either transmitting it or getting the disease,” Maher said. “We know that. That’s a fact now.”

He continued, “They just prevent you from dying, which is a great part of it, let’s not undercount that.”

“But if they don’t prevent you from transmitting it and they don’t prevent you from getting it why are we still treating this disease the way we always have?” he inquired. “And what the f–k is the use of a booster shot? Because I will never get a booster shot.”

Maher doubled down on his stance later on the show, disclosing that he personally experienced how inefficient vaccines are in preventing the spread of COVID-19 when he got the virus in spite of being vaccinated.

“What’s so different from where we were two months ago the last time I sat here is that we now know the vaccine does not stop you from getting it,” said the comedian. “I found that out when I got it.”

He explained, “It doesn’t stop you from getting it and it doesn’t stop you from transmitting it. It stops you from dying when you do get it. I’m not saying it’s not a good reason. I’m just saying that’s a huge difference and it counteracts the argument that we need the vaccine to protect other people.”

“It just protects you,” he concluded. “It doesn’t protect you from me, doesn’t protect me from getting it. It protects you. So, it’s just really about you now,
