The Sons of Anarchy star previously portrayed the character in Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, both of which are still hailed as cult-classic superhero movies.

However, though del Toro intended to helm one final entry to serve as an endcap to his planned trilogy, factors such as the Golden Army’s box office under-performance, the director’s busy schedule, and a lack of studio support, ultimately led to the project’s cancellation in 2017.

Instead, a 2019 reboot of the franchise was greenlit in its place, with del Toro replaced in the role of director with Doomsday (2008) director Neil Marshal.

Starring David Harbour of Stranger Things fame, this reboot was universally panned by fans and critics alike, with both Perlman and del Toro later admitting that they wanted little to do with the project.

During a recent interview with The Independent, Perl asserted,”Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f***ing years old,” before assuring fans that despite his lack of excitement, he would still be up for donning the red makeup, prosthetics and trenchcoat one last time.

Why? Because, in his own words, “We owe this to the fans.”

“We should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion,” Perlman said. “So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f**king thing done.”

Perlman and del Toro have a long history of working together, going back decades the director’s directorial debut, Cronos.

Most recently, the award-winning Mexican director convinced Perlman to play a small role in his recently released Nightmare Alley.

According to Perlman, their relationship began when del Toro wrote him a personal letter asking him to appear in the film.

“It was a letter you don’t get very often in life. The type of letter you save and when you have the money, you frame it,” Perlman said. “Reading the letter, it was like I’d won a lifetime achievement award. I was an obscure character actor behind these masks. Nobody recognised me, let alone knew my name, but he did.”

In December, Perlman told Inverse that though he had already made “peace with the fact that the book [on Hellboy 3] is closed,” considering how he had just appeared in a remake of a 1947 film he thought no one would ever produce, that anything was possible.

“I’m pretty sure that in 1947, nobody working on Nightmare Alley ever thought there’d be a 2021 version. So never say never, right?” he told the outlet.

He added, “Somebody may pick it up at some point and finish the trilogy. I hope they finish the trilogy. And I hope Guillermo’s script is the one that they make to finish the trilogy. Whether he directs it or not. Whether I’m Hellboy doesn’t matter. It’s just that circle needs to be completed.”old Inverse.
