PlayStation’s upcoming plans were first hinted at by game journalist Greg Miller, who tweeted on March 27th, “Man, looking like it might be a VERY interesting week for PlayStation if even one of the three rumors I’ve heard is true.”

“As such, we’re gonna delay recording PS I Love You XOXO until Thursday,” he added, hinting that a notable announcement would be coming this Wednesday or Thursday, at the latest.

While Miller did not indicate what “three rumors” he was specifically referring to, a recent tweet from video game industry analyst and leaker Joakim “Rythian” Hellstrand may have already provided fans with a hint as to what one of them may be.

As reported by GGRecon, on February 13th, Rythian cryptically tweeted, “Marvel x PlayStation Studios = [mind blown emoji].”

This was followed by a series of emojis, each seemingly referring to a specific Marvel hero, including Daredevil, Iron Man or Iron Fist, Spider-Man, The Punisher, and Captain America.

Rumors that PlayStation would be expanding their Marvel line of games out from Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man series have been circulating ever since May 2020, when a vague exchange between voice actor Troy Baker and Marvel Games VP & Creative Director Bill Rosemann hinted at the possibility of the Man Without Fear’s solo console debut.

Engaging with a tweet which asked users, “What is your dream superhero game and which developer would you want to make it?”, Baker tagged Rosemann and wrote “:: cough :: :: COUGH ::”, to which the Marvel exectuive replied, “You, sir, are clearly a man without fear.”

However, after hastily deleting his tweet, Rosemann would clarify, “From the office of Nelson & Murdock: While Bill greatly admires the Man Without Fear, there is no Daredevil game in development, Bill’s tweet to @TroyBakerVA was an acknowledgment of their shared desire about creating said game & he apologizes for any confusion his tweet created.”

Baker would later go on to voice Bruce Banner in the Crystal Dynamics-developed Marvel’s Avengers and Simon Krieger in Insomnic Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

The flames of speculation surrounding a Daredevil game were further fanned in January 2021.

“Can we get a badass open world #Daredevil game with @TroyBakerVA playing him and have us be able to play as Matt Murdock also and be able to defend people in court,” wished a fan on Twitter. “Maybe even have it take place in the same universe as @insomniacgames Spider-Man. @MarvelGames.”

In turn, Baker reacted with only a simple wide-eyed emoji – possibly hinting that either a Daredevil game was already in development – though such a project  would typically require him to sign an NDA preventing him from even suggesting its existence – or his continued excitement at the possibility of bringing Horn Head to life.

It would hardly be a surprise to see more Marvel games from PlayStation, especially following the success of Insomiac Games’ aforementioned Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Both games are currently sitting at a score of over 85 on Metacritic, with user scores of 8.7 and 7.6 respectively.

A proper sequel to the first game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was announced in September 2021. Featuring Venom and what could be Kraven the Hunter, it’s currently slated for release in 2023.

Nonetheless, following the bomb of Marvel’s Avengers by Crystal Dynamics and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy undershooting of its “initial expectations,” one imagines that Marvel will be much more cautious with their video game endeavors going forward, as while their movies, TV shows, and of course comics continue to find audiences to capitalize on, games have found their relationship with the House of Ideas on shaky ground.

After all, Guardians of the Galaxy sold poorly despite being much more warmly received by players than Avengers, lending credence to the theory that the Kamala Khan-led live-service title harmed the brand so badly people avoided a game by an entirely different developer.
