Sharon Stone could be back for another stint as a villainous role opposite an animal-based DC Comics hero, this time turning her attentions from Gotham’s resident feline heroine to the buggy Blue Beetle.

TheWrap first reported in an exclusive that Stone is in early negotiations to play Victoria Kord in Blue Beetle, a character created for the film but whose last name offers a nod to the second Blue Beetle and the man to hold the scarab before Jamie Reyes, Ted Kord.

We have no clue yet if Ted will be in the film, but Cobra Kai star Xolo Mariduena is currently attached to portray Jamie.

Also set for the adventure is Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.), who will portray Carapax the Indestructible Man, a hulking cyborg that’s been a rival to both Ted Kord and original Blue Beetle Dan Garrett.

Further, Blue Beetle will be directed by Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) and feature a script written by Scarface remake and Miss Bala screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, while John Rickard (Peacemaker) will serve as a producer.

Warner Bros. and DC Films may have forgotten but we’ve Stone play a super-villain in another DC Comics film – Catwoman – and it wasn’t very good.

To jog everyone’s memory, in the 2004 bomb, Stone played a crooked makeup mogul who eventually plummets to her death following a showdown with Patience Phillips (Halle Berry) in her costumed alter-ego.

Someone should remind Warner Bros. of this particular misstep – unless they do remember and still think “Well, why not try the exact same thing again?”

Further compounding fans’ feeling of unease toward Blue Beetle is how Warner Bros.’ DC recent live-action track record has been less than impressive.

There was detectable goodwill and anticipation for the most recent such project, Wonder Woman 1984, across 2019 and through its numerous delays, but when it finally released, well, we know how it turned out.

Their next, Jame’s Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, ultimately turned out to be a box-office bomb, despite being received much better than the first.

And while many have Matt Reeves’ The Batman to be a welcome break from the DCEU’s usual output, the studio’s upcoming slate of films such as Black Adam, Batgirl, and The Flash stand to pull the comic book publisher’s live-action endeavors back into the gutters.

I suspect a similar situation will play out with Blue Beetle, which is unfortunate because this character  – not just Jamie Reyes, but also Ted and Dan – has never gotten a chance to shine like this before.

And while it could be the name Sharon Stone triggering bad memories of Catwoman, you can’t pin fan unease on her. This debacle, should there be one, will solely be on the studios.

Formerly slated for HBO Max, Blue Beetle has since been switched to a theatrical release and given a premiere date of Aug. 18, 2023.
