The scene in question technically isn’t even a cutscene, but rather the game’s title screen, which concludes with an ensemble cast of Star Wars characters posing and sharing some humorous animations between each other.

In the case of the Disney trilogy’s sidelined duo, Finn cowardly leaps into Rose Tico’s arms a’la Scooby Doo before being set back down and having Poe place his arm around Finn’s shoulder.

While arguably in character given Finn’s propensity to often panic or flee in terror (albeit not without good reason) and Poe constantly reassuring him, some players took it as confirmation of a romantic relationship between the two.

The interaction doesn’t end there, as upon letting the intro idle, Captain Phasma soon interjects and attempts to force a Stormtrooper helmet onto Finn.

After he falls over and Poe yeets his helmet into Phasma, Poe picks Finn off the deck, and puts his arm back around him again, resetting the idle animation to its default state.

Taking this as yet another moment in support of the fan theory, some fans like @comfortfinnpoe excitedly exclaimed, “LEGO POE DEFENDING FINN AND THEN GOING STRAIGHT BACK PUTTING HIS ARM AROUND HIM WE GET IT YOU’RE IN LOVE.”

Amid the phenomena of “shipping” fictional characters – the practice of imagining two given characters in a romantic relationship that was originally relegated to the world of fan canon but has slowly grown to the point where individuals take their own hopes as confirmed fact – one popular idea was that Poe and Finn share romantic feelings for each other.

However, this pairing – referred to as “FinnPoe” and “Stormpilot” – was fueled by more than just crazed fan theory.

In a 2016 interview with ShortList regarding The Force Awakens, Finn actor John Boyega was asked if Finn and Poe had heard the theory, and if it was more than a “bromance.”

“Yeah, I’ve seen that. It’s so not true,” Boyega dismissed. “Oscar [Isaac] wishes it was though, it’s all in his head. It’s a brotherly love, a bromance, that’s for sure.”

Speaking with Variety ahead of the 2019 premiere of The Rise of Skywalker, Isaac openly discussed his regret that the characters’ “natural chemistry” was not further explored in Disney’s trilogy.

“Personally, I kind of hoped and wished that maybe that would’ve been taken further in the other films, but I don’t have control,” Isaac bemoaned. “It seemed like a natural progression, but sadly enough it’s a time when people are too afraid, I think, of… I don’t know what.”

Claiming that the “ambiguity” of the pair’s relationship allowed more people to identify with the characters, Isaac added, “but if they would’ve been boyfriends, that would have been fun.”

At the same time, Boyega had apparently become more open to the idea, telling the trade news outlet, “They’ve always had a quite loving and open relationship in which it wouldn’t be too weird if it went beyond it. But at the same time, they are just platonic at the moment.”

While actors embody their roles, director J.J. Abrams informed Variety that Finn and Poe’s “relationship to me is a far deeper one than a romantic one.”

“It is a deep bond that these two have, not just because of the trial by fire in which they met, but also because of their willingness to be as intimate as they are, as afraid as they, as unsure as they are, and still be bold, and still be daring and brave,” he said.

Abrams concluded that as he strived to cast Star Wars with people who “looked more the way the world looks than not,” that also applied to gay characters.

“And in the case of the LGBTQ community, it was important to me that people who go to see this movie feel that they’re being represented in the film,” he affirmed.

When pressed for if Rise of Skywalker would have a gay character, Abrams responded while smiling “I will say I’m giving away nothing about what happens in the movie. But I did just say what I just said.”

This would eventually manifest as two background characters sharing a kiss at the film’s conclusion, in a moment that was ultimately cut from the Singapore and Dubai releases of the film.

Prior to Rise of Skywalker’s release, Issac put the blame at the lack of gay representation at the feet of his own bosses.

“I think there could’ve been a very interesting, forward-thinking – not even forward-thinking, just, like, current-thinking – love story there, something that hadn’t quite been explored yet,” Issac told IGN. “Particularly the dynamic between these two men in war that could’ve fallen in love with each other.”

“I would try to push it a bit in that direction, but the Disney overlords were not ready to do that,” he claimed.

While that may have been true of Disney bosses of 2019, it seems Disney are now extremely eager to show more gay characters, especially in lieu of their political battle in Florida.

As seen in a previously leaked company email, CEO Bob Chapek had originally stated that Disney would not be openly opposing the Florida Parental Rights in Education bill (falsely dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill) as despite being a “force for inclusion,” he did not want the company to become “a political football.”

48 hours of activist rage later, and Disney u-turned on the decision, announcing that they would instead become an “outspoken champion” on the issue.

Subsidiaries such as Marvel followed  soon after, and Disney has since gone on to declare their intent to have the law repealed or struck down and push a “not-at-all-secret gay agenda.”
