A review of the upcoming Nintendo Switch release of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has given fans hope that, unlike its PlayStation 4 release, its original translation has been kept in tact.

In his review of the port for RPG Site, Nathan Lee noted that a particular sentence caught his eye, writing, “Atlus’ localization team has also gone back and fixed a couple of odd and mistranslated lines from the original PS4 version’s English dub.”

“Vanillaware has handled 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim’s Switch port with the utmost care and, with some of the changes, may even be better than the PS4 version,” he said in his 10/10 review of the title.

As noted by Lee, upon its release in 2020, the Western PlayStation 4 release of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was discovered to have had multiple changes made to its script during its translation into Engilsh.

One instance concerned a male character who adopts a female identity while in hiding. In the original Japanese, they state crossdressing “is more convenient for me.” In the English version, they say “some binaries work for me, and others don’t,” changing the character to non-binary

In another, when a male character is asked if they liked another man, the original Japanese script sees them respond,  “What are you saying? I’m a guy, I obviously wouldn’t [like him]…”, while in English the line was changed to, “You think I like him just ’cause he’s a guy?

This controversy came to light mere days after it was discovered that Atlus had also censored a scene involving two comic-relief gay characters in Persona 5 Royal, seemingly in response to Western outrage accusations of homophobia towards its original depiction.

While Lee’s review did not specify just how 13 Sentinels’ script had been ‘fixed’, it didn’t stop fans on social media from speculating, with some taking it to mean the Switch release will be more accurate and others fearing Atlus had strayed even further from the original script.

“Curious,” @DimitriMonroeZ cautiously admitted. “Will pick it up if it actually fixes the lines. Feel like we’re seeing more of these retranslations?”

“The Switch release of 13 Sentinels seems to fix some lines from Atlus’s initial translation, but it’s unclear which ones,” @Scratch_Point_Z wrote. “Hopefully, this update includes removing unnecessary changes made to characters for the sake of Western localization.”

Erring on the side of caution, @DarkyLord11 hesitated, “Now to hope it means they fixed their politically motivated b——t changes, rather than ‘fixed’ more lines to be politically motivated. Seeing how Persona 5 Royal was a ‘fixed’ translation of OG Persona 5, but actually just made Royal a censored version. I don’t trust Atlus…”
