In a time where everything has gone CG including giant monsters, practically done creatures have become a novelty throughout most of the world. This includes China which has produced a few notable kaiju movies in the past several years.

The Great Wall starring Matt Damon and Willem Dafoe comes to mind, but that sweeping period epic didn’t exactly set the world on fire.

They, along with Thai co-producers, may turn their luck around by going with tangible special effects and a spooky new monster in the horror film The Lake. An official teaser just released that you can gaze upon right here.

Dark, moody, and foreboding, there is some serious atmosphere in that trailer that’s on par with Cloverfield and the 2014 Godzilla. We also see some solid glimpses of the monster that’s something straight out of Jurassic Park.

Those are life-sized animatronics caught in the rain, aside from a few spare CG shots of a tale, tearing apart vehicles – much like the Rex and the raptors from 1993. Thankfully, we don’t see an overabundance of them and only enough to tell that the lifeform is big and mean.

The beast seems familiar and that’s because it was designed by the accomplished Jordu Schell who gave us the alien creatures in several films including Cloverfield, The Thing, Starship Troopers, The Mist, Feast, Avatar, Men in Black, Planet of the Apes, The Cabin in the Woods, and Predators.

Equally familiar is the plot which, according to a Letterboxd synopsis, concerns “A small country girl finds a mysterious egg in a field and brings it to her town. Now a giant nine-meters monster rises from the lake causing havoc just to find her egg.”

The Lake has a release date in Thailand set for this summer, August 18th. No North American release date has been announced as of yet but it’d be easy to see a roadshow or limited run for it regionally. People on this side of the Pacific are already anticipating it.
