Zack Snyder rolled cameras on his Netflix project, Rebel Moon, for the first time last week, and the Justice League director couldn’t wait to share photos from the set.

So in a first look, he posted on Twitter and his other socials including Vero three behind-the-scenes images of day one of filming, providing the caption “It’s begun.”

Two of them show the interior and exterior of a structure that looks like the rear of a starship or plane with an inclined loading bay type of entrance for troops and supplies.

The construct was completed with wooden scaffolding and portions of greenscreen so it’s clearly filling in for a vessel that will be rendered with CG.

It might even be a land vehicle with monster truck tires or tank wheels. No one is sure yet as the film’s exact details are a closely guarded secret, but it’s clear the craft could have some kind of cargo in the script.

Snyder also shared a close-up camera test image of Djimon Hounsou in costume. His character is unknown but Hounsou must be pretty important to the plot if his is one of the first we see in BTS material.

Rebel Moon is the second film Snyder is making as part of his production company Stone Quarry’s first-look deal with Netflix. Starting life as a dark Star Wars pitch, he reworked it into an original concept with designs on spinning it off as a franchise like he did with Army of the Dead.

“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder told The Hollywood Reporter last July. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure.”

He added, “My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out. I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe.”

The movie has no release date but is expected to shoot through November. It may also wind up split into two films, according to reports, as Snyder meant to do with his Justice League sequels.

Snyder continued, “Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing, and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

Rebel Moon stars Sofia Boutella (The Mummy) as emissary Kora who travels to other planets looking for help when her peaceful colony home is attacked by a celestial dictator named Belisarius (Rupert Friend).

The screenplay is co-written by Snyder, 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad, and Snyder’s Army of the Dead screenwriting partner Shay Hatten.
