What would’ve sounded unthinkable a few months ago is now the case according to former Hollywood Reporter editor Matthew Belloni in an article for Puck.

Belloni says Warner Chairman Toby Emmerich particularly is looking at the success of The Batman theatrically and the big “Correction” by Netflix – as in the massive drop in subscribers – with the mindset it’s a sign the tide is turning back in favor of the theaters.

The Batman made $750 million in a 45-day run and that has Emmerich thinking maybe investing “a bit more money into Batgirl, perhaps up the visual effects and the music budget and the planned marketing spend” might be worth it.

Matt Reeves’s dark thriller take on the Dark Knight is doing well by most accounts in its second phase of life on streaming so it seems logical, on paper, that a related IP might have similar success.

Batgirl finished shooting in the UK fairly recently with an eye for a December HBO Max release as the plot is set at Christmastime.

It has been marketed so far as a mid-budget picture that would spearhead a slate of such solo flicks for mid-level heroes – a model not too disparate from Peacemaker which was a sensation this year.

Blue Beetle, starring Xolo Mariduena and Susan Sarandon, who just closed a deal to star as the villain in a win over Sharon Stone, was to follow suit; but plans there might be up in the air too.

A new release date for Batgirl has not been confirmed and it’s possible we won’t see it or a trailer until late next year since The Flash has been pushed to June of 2023.

Both films co-star Michael Keaton in his epic return to the black rubber cape and cowl but Batgirl is supposed to come after The Flash release-wise and in continuity.
