Variety reports that Matt Shakman, the director of WandaVision, will direct two episodes of the (despite a rumor the title is “Monarch”) still-unnamed  Apple TV+ program and serve as an executive producer.

Shakman directed every episode of WandaVision, work for which he earned an Emmy nomination, and executive produced the streaming series.

He is very accomplished behind the camera, having directed episodes of Game of Thrones, The Boys, Mad Men, and Fargo as well as 40 episodes of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Additionally, he is attached to helm the next Star Trek movie – at least at this stage. The sequel is still in the works after years of development.

Very little about Apple’s series from Legendary Entertainment is known but it will reportedly fill in the gaps in the lore and history of the MonsterVerse – especially events taking place between Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Leaked details and Variety indicate the storyline will revolve around a family deeply connected to Monarch, which is the secretive global organization responsible for monitoring the Titans, and they have years of buried secrets this family must dig up.

Casting is not in place as far as we or the public knows, though Giant Freakin Robot has been following developments with the series. Their sources say Legendary is eyeing Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt (Falcon and the Winter Soldier) for the leads.

It’s not clear if the Russells would play father and son – the safe bet if the show takes place in the 2010s – or if Wyatt possibly plays the younger self of his dad in flashbacks. That’s assuming, of course, the story goes back and forth in time to revisit happenings immediately post-Skull Island.

Apple’s MonsterVerse series is created and executive produced by comic book writer Matt Fraction and Chris Black. He serves as showrunner as Safehouse Pictures co-produces with Godzilla owner Toho.
