From Aliens: Dark Descent To Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Here Are All The Reveals And Updates From The Summer Game Fest 2022

The Summer Game Fest 2022 recently kicked off yet another season of pseudo-E3 presentations, and for anyone who missed out or just can’t remember which games caught their interest, we’ve got a round-up of all the show’s reveals.

First up, just a few days after the game’s announcement and the subsequent leaking of its starting roster, Capcom officially revealed Guile’s appearance in the upcoming Street Fighter 6.

Sporting his signature brushcut and a new denim-heavy aesthetic, Guile and the rest of the world warriors are set to hit the Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms in 2023.

Next, with the first new title of the show, was Battlefleet Gothic developer Focus Entertainment with Aliens: Dark Descent, a squad-based RTS which tasks players with gathering resources, fixing their ship, and upgrading their squad, all in service of getting their platoon of marines off of Moon Lethe alive.

Beyond standard Xenomorphs, players will also have to fight off Prateorians, Alien Queens, and even rogue Weyland-Yutani Corporation operatives when the title launches in 2023 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

The Callisto Protocol dropped the director’s cut version of its trailer, showing off both the former Dead Space’ developers gory inspiration and the first glimpses of the title’s actual gameplay.

Set within the Black Iron Prison colony on Jupiter’s eponymous moon, The Callisto Protocol puts players in the shoes of inmate Jacob Lee, who must fight to survive amongst the mutated forms of his fellow prisoners.

Players can set out to uncover just what the United Jupiter Corporation is hiding when the game launches December 2nd for the Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

Prior to the official show, Activision revealed new gameplay for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – no, not the one from 2009, but rather a new title that’s coming on October 28th for players on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

With this reveal out of the way, during the Summer Games Fest itself, Activision presented gameplay from the game’s Dark Water level, which finds beloved operators from across the franchise set out for an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico to stop a missile bound for the US.

The original Flashback launched in 1992. Now, 30 years later and thanks to Microids, Flashback 2 is set to launch Winter 2022 on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

While Conrad B.Hart has thwarted Master Brain, the Morphs are back and Ian has been kidnapped. Some of the first game’s developers are also returning to work on the sequel, including designers Paul Cuisset and Thierry Perreau, and Amiga composer Raphaël Gesqua.

Witchfire revealed a new look at its actual gameplay, along with confirmation that the game will soon arrive in Early Access via the Epic Games Store.

Developed by former Painkiller and Bulletstorm devs, Witchfire takes place within a carefully crafted a world where the Vatican is not only willing to use pagan magic to defeat witches, but has gifted you with a magical arsenal to hunt them down.

Despite being an indie game, Fort Solis certainly came out swinging.

In the latest example of their AAA ambitions, developers Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar Games revealed that the game will feature the voice talents of Troy Baker and Roger Clark – their first project together since Red Dead Redemption 2.

 The former will portray protagonist Wyatt Taylor, a medical officer who during one particular graveyard shift finds himself compelled to unravel the mystery of the titular Martian outpost, while the latter will voice Jack Leary, a maintenance engineer who can end up at loggerheads with Wyatt.

While details on the narrative thriller itself are scant, Baker described it as “Dead Space meets Duncan Jones’ Moon.”

 

Routine seems to be anything but, as its eerie re-reveal trailer put players face-to-face with one of the game’s terrifying robot enemies.

Though another space-based horror game, Raw Fury promises to keep things fresh by using “Full Body Awareness, Deadzone Aiming & minimal UI [to] help create a gripping and atmospheric experience.”

In addition to these gameplay elements, the game also promises to feature an OST crafted by DOOM composer Mick Gordon when it eventually launches on Steam, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Game Pass.

Following a bizarre interlude wherein Dwayne Johnson presented the already-revealed Black Adam trailer and pimped his Zoa energy drink, Frost Giant Studios showed their first trailer for their upcoming sci-fi RTS, Stormgate.

Developed by ex-Blizzard Entertainment staff who worked on both Starcraft and Warcraft, Stormgate promises 4K graphics, a UI and interface with streamlined inputs, boasting a lowered skill floor while keeping the ceiling high, up to three player co-op and multiplayer, and an editor to make your own maps and units.

Though the game is free-to-play, Production Director and CEO Tim Morten swears that the game will have no pay-to-win or NFT elements. An open beta for the game begins 2023, with registration available now. 

Keeping with the “humanity is boned” theme, Demagog Studios unveiled Highwater, an adventure strategy game which finds the planet flooded thanks to global warming.

Set in the same universe as the studio’s previous Golf Club Wasteland and The Cub, players must venture forth to find Alphaville, a city where the global elite have taken refuge and may be preparing to take a rocket to other worlds.

Though a trailer for Sad Cat Studios’ Replaced was originally planned for the show, the Belarusian developer, who counts numerous Ukrainan nationals amongst its staff, had their best efforts hindered by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Instead, host Geoff Keighly took the time (54:08) to explain the situation and expressed his hope they would be able to show their game in the future.

Next up was Raw Fury, who debuted American Arcadia, a platform-puzzler which finds citizens of the titular city living unawares as subjects of a Truman-esque reality show where if your ratings drop, you’re dead.

With millions of cameras broadcasting their every move and nowhere left to hide, players will have to figure out how to escape when the entire city is working against them when American Arcadia releases to Steam and a number of as-of-yet unspecified console platforms.

In the lead-up to the show, Keighly teased that a long-awaited sequel would finally be unveiled – and he wasn’t wrong!

Following in the footsteps of the first game’s launch trailer, Coffee Stain Studios used another Dead Island fake out – this time based on the reveal trailer for the series’ second entry – to announce Goat Simulator 3.

And for those asking, no, you’re not crazy: there was no Goat Simulator 2.

Goat Simulator 3 will bring chaos to the the Epic Games Store, as well as PlayStation and Xbox consoles, later this Fall. 

Firaxis Games showed off the latest trailer for their upcoming card-based RPG, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, therein confirming that Spider-Man and Venom will join the battle between Hell and heroes on different sides.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns launches October 7th for the Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

Taking the stage with one of the few trailers to actually feature gameplay, Studio MDHR showed off a small snippet of Ms. Chalice’s boss battle against Mortimer Freeze from the upcoming Cuphead DLC, The Delicious Last Course.

This DLC campaign launches June 30th on Steam, GOG, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. 

A speed-running FPS platformer from Annapurna Interactive, Neon White centers on a team of damned soul who attempt to earn a place in Heaven by killing demons who have escaped from Hell.

This fast-paced title also allows players to use their weapons to boost their movement abilities, leading players to ask themselves such questions as ‘Do I use my sniper to hit a distant foe or use it to rush forward?’ or ‘Should I pepper a foe with an SMG spray or stomp the ground below me to open up an unexpected getaway path?’

On top of all this, you’ll also develop relationships with your fellow damned assassin, growing closer with them through the items you find and maybe work out if you knew them in your past life.

Neon White launches June 16th for Steam and Nintendo Switch.

One-man developer Jacob Dzwinel proudly unveiled Midnight Fight Express, which finds a former criminal hood lured back into the life in order to prevent an organization from gaining total control of the underworld before sunrise.

Offering character customization, a number of combos and dodges with which to pummel goons, and options to use the environment to their advantage in a way Batman would be proud of, Midnight Fight Express has a demo available now ahead of its August 23rd release on Steam, the Windows Store, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Game Pass.

Digital Extremes has Tennocon 2022 on the horizon, but they couldn’t resist showing off a tease for Warframe’s Duviri Paradox expansion, wherein players may finally find out what happened to the Zariman Ten Zero.

The full gameplay reveal will come at their upcoming event on July 16th.

Flexing their penchant for fascinating characters and action RPGs, Genshin Impact developer MiHoYo showed off two of their upcoming games, beginning with 3D turn-based RPG Honkai Star Rail.

The fourth game in the Honkai Impact universe, signs ups for the game’s second closed beta are available now for PC, Android and iOS players.

While these are likely the game’s final release platforms, interestingly, those who register for the beta on the official website also have a chance of winning a PlayStation 5.

Touted as a futuristic urban action game, Zenless Zone Zero drops players into New Eridu, a city whose energy is provided by the Ether of Hollows, strange space-time disturbances that spawn monsters and corrupts civilians.

Accepting anyone within its walls, the city has seen the rise of at least four different factions – five if we include Soldier 11 who may or may not be the player character – all of which will present a challenge for players when the game launches on PC, Android, and iOS systems.

Sign-ups for the game’s closed beta are open now.

Dotemu showed up with a lot of turtle power, announcing not only that Casey Jones will be a playable character, but that the game will feature local and online co-op for up to six players.

The turtles also confirmed a June 16th release date for Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Game Pass.

Bandai Namco’s upcoming RPG celebration of the series 25th anniversary, One Piece Odyssey, blasted off with a new trailer.

The game tells an adventure worked on by series author and creator Eiichiro Oda, wherein the Straw Hat Pirates find themselves upon a mysterious island filled with a vast amount of technologically advanced ruins and wacky-yet-savage animals.

One Piece Odyssey launches sometime this year for Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

Atlus showed the latest trailer for Soul Hackers 2, therein debuting the game’s English dub.

In a world where humanity has become more technologically advanced, the population has grown blind to the conflict between the Yatagarasu and Phantom Society Devil Summoners clans.

However, as the world’s data begins to join together as the sentient being Aion, it creates Ringo and Figue to prevent the disaster it has predicted.

Soul Hackers 2’s gameplay will be familar to fans of the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, requiring players to make a squad of demons to take on foes, when it launches August 26th for the Steam, Windows Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

 

2K and Supermassive Games revealed the launch trailer for The Quarry, an Until Dawn-inspired narrative adventure game following nine camp counselors who, as they begin to close up at summer’s end, someone or something comes to put them away.

Whether you use the game’s Movie Mode to enjoy the narrative as a simple movie-like experience or call on your friends to make their own life-or-death decisions, The Quarry hopes to bring everyone in for scares.

Surprisingly, it’s available right now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, having launched just 24 hours after its appearance at The Summer Game Fest.

Inflexion Games shared the first gameplay for Nightingale.

First debuting at The Game Awards 2021, the shared-world survival game dares players to work together across the Lands of Fey to figure out why the world’s network of portals have become broken and scrambled.

Nightingale launches Q4 2022 for Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The Saints Row Reboot also dropped a demo – kinda.

Rather than a demo of the full game, Volition unveiled The Boss Factory, an expansive character creator that allows players to build their avatar and import them into the full game. Players can share their creations with others, and the best shared online before the game’s launch have the chance of winning prizes.

August 23rd marks the official Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S release date for the next outing on the Row.

Hot on the heels of the game’s recent look at the Psyker class at Games Workshop’s own Warhammer Skulls event, DEV showed off another new look at the gameplay at Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.

An FPS title, Darktide finds a desperate Imperium turning to the criminal elements of the Tertium hive-city to stop the spread of a corrupting pandemic by a group of Nurgle worshippers. The game is set to launch on PC and Xbox consoles September 13th.

While everyone and their mother suspected Bloober Team were working on a new Silent Hill game, they instead revealed their actual project, Layers of Fears.

Promising to “build upon” the prior Layer of Fear games, this next entry will see players pulled into an artist’s madness, infecting those around him when it launches in early 2023 for the Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

Gotham Knights also had a brand new trailer, this time focusing on the grown-up form of the original Boy Wonder, Nightwing.

In the wake of Batman’s apparent death, Nightwing will team-up with Batgirl, Robin, and the Red Hood to protect Gotham from the Court of Owls when the game launches October 25th for the Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.

Finally, the show concluded with a discussion between Keighly and Naughty Dog studio director Neil Druckmann – who throughout the panel continually vented his frustration at how his studio’s presentation was leaked before the show by making ‘jokes’ about the matter – regarding a cavalcade of upcoming The Last of Us related projects.

To that end, though it was leaked way back in 2020, Druckmann confirmed development of a multiplayer title built in The Last of Us’ engine, further promising that with the help of the former Uncharted developers working on the title, the game would weave its story into its gameplay.

Beyond that, Druckmann revealed a few pieces of concept art and promised more information on the game will be revealed next year.

Keighly and Druckmann also touched upon the upcoming HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, with the latter sharing a still featuring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey and Ellie and promising that the series will be the most faithful adaption of a video game yet.

Druckman also revealed that the Joel and Ellie’s video game voice actors, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, respectively, would have major roles in the upcoming series rather than mere cameos.

Finally, Druckmann premiered a trailer for an apparently redesigned-from-the-ground-up remake of The Last of Us Part I, which will reportedly feature overhauled combat, graphics, and animations.

The Last of Us Part 1 will launches September 2nd exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
