It’s no laughing matter – Joker 2 is happening and it promises to bring a new and wholly-separate-from-the-Snyderverse version of Harley Quinn to the silver screen.

A different continuity means Margot Robbie is out, and according to the latest word from Variety, pop star Lady Gaga is in talks to play Todd Phillips’ iteration of Joker’s girl.

While no deal has yet been struck, as the singer-slash-actress is reportedly only in early talks to join, this hasn’t stopped artists from envisioning just what Gaga might look like in the upcoming film.

One such creator was freelance digital artist TheImaginativeHobbyist, who created a mock poster for the sequel showing what Gaga might look like in Harley’s eye mask and signature jester-inspired headwear.

Titled Joker: Folie à Deux – French for ‘Madness of Two’ – refers to a disorder wherein a delusion is shared between two people, especially criminal accomplices.

That fits Joker and Harley’s dynamic to a tee, as the latter operates not just as a sidekick or love interest to her ‘Puddin’’, but is also a sycophant trying desperately to win the attention and approval of the man who has her caught in his web.

If that wasn’t mind-bending enough, Variety added that Joker 2 will be a musical. A daring and unexpected play from Phillips, the idea suits the multi-talented Gaga, who would definitely be in her element should she be called upon to flex her pipes.

After all, in addition to the years-long success of her career as a musician, her performance in the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born earned Gaga an Academy Award – interestingly, just one year before Joaquin Phoenix won one for himself for his performance in the first Joker.

Pairing the characters with the concept of a musical conjures images of Repo: The Genetic Opera more than, say, West Side Story, though we don’t quite know just how bleak Folie à Deux is going to be compared to its predecessor.

A sequel to The Joker has been rumored to be in development for the past few years, with some whispers suggesting that Phoenix would, in addition to starring in and getting a raise for the film, would co-write the Clown Prince of Crime’s second outing.

However, all this speculation was quickly dashed when Phillips officially confirmed he was working on the next project, doing so by sharing a screenshot of the script’s page – which credited the first film’s co-writing team of Phillips and Scott Silver – followed by a photo of Phoenix reading it.
