Legendary And Netflix Release First Teaser Image For King Kong Anime Series Skull Island

It’s been mostly radio silence since the Monsterverse spin-off anime was announced by Netflix – to the point where some have even started if the series was still in development.

Thankfully for eager fans any doubts can now be laid to rest, as Legendary Television has officially released the first sneak-peek image for Skull Island, and while it isn’t much, it speaks volumes.
Unveiled during Netflix’s recent Geeked Week event and shared by Legendary across all of their related social media accounts – including the Twitter for Kong: Skull Island, which surprisingly remains active after all these years – our first glimpse at the MonsterVerse-set series from the production team behind the Castlevania anime adaptation is a single screenshot showing an aerial view of a set of Kong footprints on a beach.

Kneeling at the center of the giant hand-shaped impression are two people who look near-microscopic in proportion to the altered landscape around them.
Alongside the image, Legendary also shared the first synopsis for the series, teasing, “Here’s your first glimpse at Skull Island, a new anime series about a group of explorers that find themselves on a collision course with strange beasts, terrifying Titans and the most mysterious island the world has ever known!”

While this new synopsis and image clear up a few questions surrounding the series, they also raise more than they can answer.
First, from the synopsis, we can determine that Skull Island will feature more Titans than just Kong, though we don’t know if this means the ape will encounter a new species of kaiju or run up against one of the many seen across Legendary’s various MonsterVerse media.

To that end, there’s also the possibility we’ll be introduced to strange new species variations on established favorites, such as the Skullcrawlers.
For example, since there exists a Queen MUTO and a MUTO Prime, similarly fearsome classifications could well exist in the Skullcrawler family tree.
Further, as we know from MonsterVerse canon, the Skullcrawlers get bigger the deeper one goes into the Hollow Earth. It’s a logical conclusion that nothing would stop them from becoming stranger while they’re at it.

Then there is the bat demon Camazotz who may make the jump from the pages of Legendary’s Kingdom Kong graphic novel to the small screen.
Admittedly, it’s a small chance that may require some breaking of continuity to make happen, but let’s imagine for a minute just how insane it would be to see Kong violently punching the beast out of the sky in full motion.
The image makes his use all the more appealing, to say the least.

The appearance of Camazotz could also help dictate which time period Skull Island is set in.
Current speculation posits that the series will take place either in the 1930s or sometime prior to the events of 1973, as depicted in Kong: Skull Island.

However, these time frames don’t exactly work out, as unless Kong reached maturity during the Depression, he wouldn’t have been big enough to make the footprints seen in the tease.
Of course, his exact size in Skull Island is currently unclear, as his design is among the many well-kept secrets of the turning wheels of the MonsterVerse, so there’s a chance these discrepancies will eventually be addressed.

In addition to Skull Island, Legendary is currently developing several other spinoffs, each of with their own secretive plots.
These include an Apple TV Godzilla series and Son of Kong, the big-screen follow-up to Godzilla vs. Kong directed by the returning Adam Wingard.

At present, none of these productions have an official release date, but regardless, the MonsterVerse keeps chugging along.
